Hi

Well this holiday is turning into a nightmare. First both my kids came down with a stomach bug and now I have got it. Its bad, I feel awful.

I'm meant to fly back tommorrow but am not sure I'll be fit to fly.

We have travel insurance through my wife's barclays premier acct.

I've read through the document and its not clear. It says up to £3000 will be paid if you can't travel due to ill health. But it says this is to pay for any accomodation and flights not used.

I've used all my accomodation, so I will need money for extra accomodation until I'm fit to travel and new flights. The new flights may cost a lot more than the ones I'll have cancelled as the former will be last minute.

All the phone lines dealing with claims/policy queries are closed as its Sunday.

Does anybody know whether the insurance will pay out for my extra stay and new flights. Also will they accept that my wife can't travel with the 2 kids on her own, as she'll want to stay with me?

What about phoning the general Barclays Premier no (0800 111 777) in the UK) who I think work on Sundays and asking for advice. They may have someone senior there who could authorise something or know a number for you to ring?

Odd that the documents you have don't give an emergency number.

Do try and get signed medical certificates in case there is an argument later.

If you've gone down because of hotel food they shouldn't charge you. Just a thought.

Worth an ask - If other guests are also sick it could point to a problem with the hotel. If that IS the case I'm not sure it would be wise to stay there in any event!!

Call Barclays asap and ask them to claify and what to do given your situation. As for where the bugs came from as long as you havn't left the hotel complex then likely the bug is from the hotel, otherwise difficult to prove.

Hope you are all ok and this is easily sorted for you.

I rang the premier line but they just put me through to the medical assistance number.

Anyway I've spoken to them and the ball is rolling but nobody can explain my rights under the policy as the only people open are the emergency medical assistance people and they don't have my particular policy details.

Anyway I mentioned to the hotel that I probably picked this up in the hotel, but they said there is no proof of that and denied there is any sort of outbreak.

I won't be able to speak to the policy dept until tommorrow be know exactly what is covered. This could turn out to be a very expensive illness....

The medical assist people should be able to sort you out?

I haven't used Barclay's, but other travel insurance when my wife was taken sick, arranged a hospital and rebooked flights. She didn't need accomodation, but that looked as though it would be the same. In fact, thinking about it, they even paid for me to fly to see her to chaperone her home.

Contact the airline/tour operator directly mate. Its the airline who will decide if you are fit to fly, and may refer you to a local doctor for a certificate of fitness also.

Sounds like a proper nightmare, but im sure the insurance will come through. Just be aware that not all insurance companies pay directly, some only reimburse in certain cases as I found out in the USA.

Part 1 of the post, I think the section you refer to is regarding missed holidays due to illness, i.e unable to go away in the first place. So not cancellation as such, but unable to use the booked holiday.

I have posted the section from the Barclays travel insurance T&C's which is applicable for your situation.

With regards to the family, it is possible that they will accomodate the kids, as they suggest they will pay for one other, usually partner. They may however suggest a chaperone for her to return to the UK leaving you out there, or suggest you cover the kids costs.

Nightmare situation, but sounds like you are in safe hands. Just make sure you follow all their rules, like contacting people and making the right phonecalls to ensure the claim remains valid.

My wife used to laugh when I used to run to scoobynet nsr if I couldn't find the answer to something, this time she suggested it!

Update.

I got a quite dehydrated yesterday and ended up on an iv drip. Took some antibiotics and loperamide and had a decent nights sleep.

I feel knackered and drained this morning. Still a little nauseous and stomach cramps but 'only' going to the loo every hour now rather than every 10 minutes like yesterday!

Its going to be a rough journey but I think I'm fit to fly.

Zip, its actually a nice hotel, I'v e stayed in a lot worse! I wouldn't have recommended it anyway though for other reasons.

Ps, there has been one benefit of this illness. I've lost most of the weight I gained whilst out here!

Hi guys.

Yes, back home! Felt quite bad on the journey but made it. Still don't feel 100%, appetite is still down and feel a bit dizzy but nothing serious.
Must say though that was one bad stomach bug. At its worst I was not actually making it back from the toilet to the bed when it was time to go back to the toilet ie 3 minutes!

Urban, I called the doctor out and convinced him the set the drip up in the bedroom, didn't want to end up in hospital.

I don't know mate as I don't know which one was featured. To be fair its a very nice hotel where everything looked spotless and food seemed super fresh.
