I'm suffering the ol' had enough of Scoob syndrome we all seem to go through, I've seen a Golf GTi Turbo, in black 3 door, Black/Red Recaro's Climate Control, all the bits.
I used to have a Red one of these before I got my Scoob, very solid, well built, cheap(er) to run, obviously nowhere near as quick as a scoob.
Has anyone got any good or bad things to say about them?
Cheers
John

Well...
VW Golf GTi 1.8T:
Power - 150bhp
0-30 - 3.1secs
0-60 - 8.5secs
0-100 - 25.6secs
1/4 Mile - 16.8secs @ 85mph
Reasonable in the performance & handling stakes, nowt sparkling but ok, however for that sort of money you can do a "lot" better.
How about a new Civic Type-R?!
Honda Civic Type-R:
Power -197bhp
0-30 - 2.7secs
0-60 - 6.7secs
0-100 - 16.2secs
1/4 Mile - 15.2secs @ 96mph
All this for a shade under £16k!!!
There are other things out there too that are better than the Golf.

I was thinking of replacing my MK3 Golf Gti with a MK4 Gti turbo a few years ago (until I test drove a scooby anyway ) for the same reasons pointed out above.
One plus with the golf turbo is that it can be a real street sleeper if you remove the badging, since most golfs come with similar trim and alloy wheels, so most people with think you are driving a 1.4 GL or something! Plus if you speak to the lads at Road and Sport Developments in Banbury, they can mod it so it can keep up with a scooby (in a straight line anyway ) How does a Oettinger 300 bhp conversion sound?

I thought that the ride was a but "floaty", esp. at motorway speeds... seemed to like to bounce along the motorway at 95 though.. gettting 32 to the gallon loads of the time!
I got one of the earlier built ones, and a lot of the trim started to fall apart..

My friends Golf 110 GT TDI eats the GTI turbo for breakfast. Admittedly he has had his chipped to 140bhp and 240lb ft torque, whilst still averaging 50-55mpg. But between 50 and 100 mph the petrol stands no chance, which is just where you want the power, ideal for overtaking.
All the smart money has to be on the new diesel engined 150bhp TDI, 150bhp, 235lb ft torque and 50mpg average. Plus if its a company car very low CO2 emissions and consequently tax bills.
