Never know why they didn't flog the channels to Sky.
I would have paid a tenner a month for ITV Sport on Sky, but wasn't about to get a box and loads of channels I didn't need/want.
I despair about what will happen to the clubs in the lower leagues.

I won't be sorry about NTL going under - I've never come accross such poor customer service in my life!
I Left BT to go to NTL, but now back with the devil I know (BT)..

..in defence of NTL we have had FREE internet access 24/7 for the last 18 months.Phone calls are competitively priced and you can have 2 phone lines for a better price than BT.
Customer service is crap, but overall i'm a satisfied customer.

Mate works for NTL... all managers including him have had to take an 8% pay cut to try and help them clear debts!!!
I would hope you were a one off case where they cocked up.
Another mate uses them and cannot praise them enough..
Personally I am still running with the 4 analogue channels!

I think if NTL get their finances in order they should survive. The problem with ITV Digital was simply a lack of customers. Don't think NTL suffers from that.

...the whole debacle is what you get when central Govt and industry get together to try to force new tech on a public that has no appetite for it and cannot see any benefit only a hit in the wallet for the hardware and the service rental. Serves them all right really you can't force a market.

Afraid NTL's bad service wasn't a one off - everyone I know whose used NTL is not happy with the service. Maybe we have a different service centre?
The customer service people were very helpful, though on my 2 attemps, it took 1 hour 20 minutes, then 1 hour 10 minutes to get through! From my experience they seemed to have pumped too much into marketing / new sales as opposed to servicing their current customers.
That's my experience of them anyway. BT aren't exactly great, though not as bad as NTL.

My mate is manager of the whole of the NTL cable...
I shall pass on that it took that long to get through...no names obviously.
I think it is a case like you say too much money pushed into one part of the company (marketing) and then when it works not enough people answering the phones to deal with them etc...
Perhaps they might eventually get it right.

JGM - when i first had digital cable, phone and cable modem installed it took 5 engineer visits, the modem arrived 3 weeks late and i was still charged for the line when i didnt have the modem, and it took a total of just under 8 hours over the period of a week on hold to customer (non)service to get it sorted. that was only after i emailed the uk head of customer relations.
maybe you could pass this on, the more problems they know about, the more they can (hopefully) do about it.

Certainly if it was shown that the customer service had improved (i.e. more people), then I'd be willing to give them another go.
After thinking about it, I would be a little worried if they did go under, as BT wouldn't have any serious competition, and may not have to try too hard to keep you!

NTL - useless. Pure and simple, can't even be bothered to go into the details. This site just totally sums them up:

To be honest I'll be glad to go back to Sky. They compress the video streams far too much on itv-digital. Watching football is the worst, its just a mass of green blobs. Whats the point of having a 32" telly, digital tv and watching a picture thats totally inferior quality compared to analogue??? Plus it'll take my living room remote count from 6 to 5 which will please the missus :-)

I completely agree about the streams being compressed too much on ITV digital. Picture quality when panning a football pitch that has stripes cut into the grass is awful, and the sound is atrocious on some broadcasts. If you have a Pro Logic 2 system you just get a mass of swirling phasing effects through the rear speakers half of the time.
The set-top boxes are also appalling - very cheap build quality - they crash a lot and the software is also bad. I have nothing to say that is good about them apart from it enabled me to record the glorious Coventry City on a few occasions so I could watch our memorable performances again when returning from the matches!
Hopefully now I can get out of my 1 year contracxt with them.
Jon.
