Default Diesel engine oil

Bought a car last Thursday and it had an oil change service prior to delivery.
Anyway i've checked the oil tonight and its black, not golden as i would expect new oil to be.
So does diesel engine oil begin life golden as per most petrol engine oils or is it black in colour from day one, or does it depend on brand?
Nik.

In a week?

I suspect that an Oil Service was not actually carried out!

Depends how old and how clean the engine is; On some, fresh oil can go black after 5mins of running the engine.

Others can take several months.

On the other hand, the oil in our 16 yr old AWD Perkins engine was always golden - but it did have 3monthly oil changes.

Diesels are particularly dirty engines, they generate a lot of very fine black powder and it is very difficult to clean it all out without stripping the engine. Diesel oil contains extra additives to collect as much of the black stuff as possible. Anyone who works on diesels engines will know how dirty your hands become.

It is quite possible that the new oil has picked up a lot of the residual black stuff from inside the engine so what you see does not necessarily mean the oil was not changed.
