Default I want them to die.

Maple trees that is.

I have nearly cut down all the maples at the end of my garden but they grow back again. They are not mine but they are between the back gardens. No one wants them but no one is prepared to do anything to get rid of them. You cant get to the base of the trees as they are below ground now.
Some have been cut down to about 4ft but new branches grow next to where they are cut. It is a never ending saga and its driving me mad

I had them cut down because they took all the light and dropped seeds every where, thousands of them. The seedlings grow in anything and if you miss them you have new trees before you know it.

What can i put in a hole in the tree to kill it that is legal? How deep do the holes have to be etc. I have some Sodium Chlorate crystals but dont know if this will work.

Anyone?

You need to hammer copper nails in to them Sarah. This will poison them!

I read that, but i think it takes a long while for them to die. And i cant find how many nails you need and how deep they have to be.

you can get jail for killing somone elses trees, be carefull

if you cut round the bark ( must be all the way round) the tree will die
if you get the sodim cristals in warm water in a watering can and pour over the tree if its small this will also poison it

The trees were abandoned years ago. They were left at the ends of the gardens and people put all their cuttings and branches where they are then fenced them off. I myself got them cut down as low as possible and put up 8ft fencing but they are growing back and reaching the tops of the fencing again. Soon they will be full grown once more. Cutting the bark is not an option as i cant get to them to do that.

So, i can drill holes(how big) and put a liquid mixture in? How many and how big? How long do they take to die?

You don't need many, and they only have to penetrate below the bark, as this is how a tree replenishes itself with water.

Alternatively cut a ring of bark around the tree and then it can get no water, and will die

, i just twigged

Mr Branch has just told me that i have to write to the Estates Department basically for permission to do anything. He said the trees belong to the council. I told him that the council should then be responsible for keeping them tidy and not a nuisance to other people. I thought i would try to be clever.

Anyway, he said he can see something on the ordinance survey map and knows the trees i am talking about.

What can i say when i write in? It could turn out that they qualify for removal if they are a nuisance.

copper nails do not work, drilling into the wood will help the wood to rot but does not kill it.

Copious amounts of salt (kitchen salt/rock salt/grit) well watered in will work but be aware nothing will grow there for quite a while

Otherwise something like SBK from a garden centre works, use it neat not watered down.

Will my sodium chlorate crystals work if i add water and put it in some drilled holes?

I dont care if nothing will grow again as the trees are in an area that is not used.

Sodium Chlorate is now banned, if the use of it was traced back to you (e.g. via a poorly animal and vet) you could be in trouble. However yes it will work, but make it up quite concentrated.

Banned? I only got it last year from Wilkinsons.

If it works then it is good enough for me. I will put a plastic bag over the bits i have treated. No dogs can get to where the trees are, just foxes and cats

If they belong to the council Sara you might have to be careful in case you get done by them for damaging them. Councils can be quite unpleasant about things like that.
