Can you take a flight?
I had to go from Newmarket to Manchester a month back. I saved a load of money and time catching a train to Heathrow then flying up.

Man book your train in advance you will save a fortune

I regularly go to liverpool and Manchester from London 1st Class, and return for less than £134

I remember that **** "3 Jags" telling us all how he would feel incompetent if he was not able to get at least 10% of all traffic off the roads and on to public transport when he was put in charge of all that when NL were first elected!

How impressive was that?

Hey Les

I travelled up to Liverpool on Friday, I shared a carriage with Alan Johnson. The funny thing was when we arrived there was a Range Rover and 2 (count them) ministerial Jags waiting for him!!!

I can only speculate that they drove up from London

BTW he is a really nice guy

The last few times I have looked at prices of train tickets for journeys in UK, it has worked out cheaper to hire a car one-way, even including petrol etc.

Train travel can be seriously cheap IF you book well in advance. My daughter goes to and from Edinburgh (from Cambridgeshire) quite frequently and occasionally has had to pay as little as £10 one way. In fact in a couple of weeks time she's travelling first class as it was actually cheaper than standard class . Up to now whenever we've gone up to see her we've gone by train as hotels are also best booked in advance and it is far cheaper, quicker and less stressful than driving (or flying!)

The problem occurs when you can not book in advance, if I had to get her there tomorrow I would probably be driving as the standard (non advance) fares are just ridiculous.

also don't forget sometimes it is cheaper to buy stages of the journey , you stay on the same train but buy legs individually , there was a web site for this but i hav'nt got the link at the mo.

I think that cost for a train ticket is an absolute rip off. In the "good old days", public transport was there just for that reason and the travel was priced as cheaply as possible and not worrying about profit either. It was regarded as a public service. This was the same for all the utilities and it shows what happense when it all passes into private hands. All the guff about great efficiency has turned to making as much cash as possible out of the public.

This is the bad side of capitalism.
