Default Electric garage door opener - advice required

Hi thinking off having an electric garage door fitted to my garage, problem is that unfortunatly the garage door itself is the only entry / exit into the garage and as such would be snookered if ever the electric opener was to fail !! is there anyway around this other than having a rear door put in the garage ??!!

p.s a couple off sellers on ebay with 100% feedback - quality german electric door openers, anyone any other recommendations for a supplier off such items who do mail order at a decent price ??

We bought two Bosch units from Germany, very easy to install

We also do not have another door so have used the manual override pull cord to get around the issue of power failure

By using the cord it disengages the cartridge from the runner and allows you to manually push the door up

You will need to check what mechanism you door has to find the correct opener

Our units cost about £100 each and have been used every day for 9 years only had to replace one of the zappers

So by having an override mechanism (pull cord) I'm assuming anyone can get into the garage?
As they don't appear to lock shut isn't this a bit of a safety/security issue?

Just wondering as I'm looking at doing the same (with no other door to the garage)

The ones I previously had from Screwfix (Motorlift) had a cord with a lock at the end. You'd need to mount the end on the garage door somewhere, then the lock allows you to release and pull the cord. I never fitted as my garage has a personnel door.

You would normally have the cord out of sight at the top of the door

Had this problem with our electric garage door (only been in the house 2 days).......the electric went off and we couldn't open the door. Had to remove a window to get in and pull the cord on the inside to release the door.

As it's a new house the builders have agreed to put in a side door

I have seperate door, but if the electric fails on mine then the front cover has to be unscrewed i think and then you attach the wind bar to manually lift the door .So its a job to do but a bit more secure i guess .
(just dont leave the bar in the garage !!!!!)

The one I fitted had a lock on the pull cord. You drill a hole at the top of the door, feed it through and lock it into place. Then if you need to use it you unlock it and pull the cord through the hole. As mentioned it only goes to the carriage not all the way back to the motor.

How do they work?
Is it a case of unlocking it and pulling the barrel out with the cable attached to the back of the barrel?
