Out of hours GP
So Friday night my g/f calls me back from walking the dog as she's feeling really unwell ..
I put the baby and her to bed make sure everything is as it should be and go to bed .. two hours later I'm sitting on the Loo with a bin in my hand ... this continues for the two of us right through the night...
This is the first time in about 15 years I have thrown up (none drink related) and I have to say I felt **** ..
Got to about 8am and neither of us could move.. having a 9 month old we clearly had a problem .. so against my advice she called the Out of Hours GP, told them we were both expressing a lot of liquid and hurting all over and that we had a baby in the house .. the reply .. sorry we're busy .. try the NHS.. bye.
Thanks for that

Yeah they're a bunch of tw@ts mate
Lady next door to me was brushing her teeth and suddenly got massive pains in her head, couldn't see properly etc - her mum called the out of hours GP and was given pretty much the same response.
She went to A&E who scanned her immediately and found she had 4 aneurysms on her brain.
She was operated on immediately to have the major one removed, surgeon told her mum that 50% of people with that condition don't make it to A&E alive.
She's home now and waiting to go back for further surgery - no thanks to the out of hours GPs.

The GP could neither perform the scan or the surgery. Him coming around could have potentially delayed her presentation and diagnoses

My wife and I had the same thing on Thursday, luckily only last 24 hours.
Last year we had the norovirus (she was pregnant at the time too). That one knocked us flat for a week and didn't start feeling better for a week after that.
Hope it's not the Norovirus Pimmo!

Sorry to hear that if it is.
Have never called out the doc before I have to say, always used NHS Direct, then gone to A&E if deemed necessary.
Quite shocked to hear so many people having such bad experiences with it all.
What happened in the end Pimmo ?

Wife used the Herts out of hours service this weekend, and we used them last christmas when our son had something like the norovirus (he was about 6 months old at the time - can be dangerous if it continues for days at a time in one so young)
Both times quick response and sorted quickly
Could be because we went to them and didn't need them to come to us though...

Hope your all on the mend soon Pimmo, sounds like that nasty virus that swept through my son's nursery before Christmas.
I hope that Pimmo Jr doesn't get it.

I was ill over chrimbo, I took my eldest & his girlfriend home after they
came over for boxing day, on the way back i had a really bad sore throat,
and thought it must be a cold comming on. I spent all of the remainder of
that night, and the next day in bed, in agony with terrible pains in my
neck head & throat. Ibruprofen & paracetamol wern't having any effect. it
got so bad, i was having difficulty swallowing even water, as one side of
my throat, has swelled so badly. Rather then call my GP out of hours
service, who from my last encounter were treating any cough, cold, or
sniffle as swine flu, and reffering anyone to the pandemic website, i got
the Mrs to call NHS direct.
They were busy lol, and the call my wife placed at 7pm, was returned at
11pm, by this time i was really feeling crap. After a brief discussion with a
nurse, he advised my to go to A&E as it could be a quinsey. So just after
midnight we arrived at A&E, only to be told by the receptionist, that it
wasnt an emergency, and A&E was only for emergencys. We tried to
explain that NHS direct had advised us to come, as it may be a quinsy,
but they just called them NHS REdirect & told us it was a 4 hrs wait before
they would even asses me, and to contact my GP.
By this time id had enough, i felt sh*t, and didnt really care to be honest.
the pain was unbearable, and i was now having difficulty swallowing, with
any attempt at drinking fluids resulting in most of it running down my chin.
The receptionist by this time realises that i may be in some difficulty, and
contacts the out of hours GP who incidently has the surgery not more than
50 feet away from A&E at the same hospital
Only to be told he's busy and cant see me as he's going out on a call.
She then got my Mrs to call the out of hours GP and explain that we were
in A&E, and that the doctor had refused to see us, despite being asked by
A&E to see me. by this time it now 1:30 AM, and i,m flaked out in a chair in
A&E, shaking & sweating, & feeling very light headed. When the out of
hours GP calls back to say he can see me now if i hurry lol.
So we traipse through a few corridors to the out of hours emergency
surgery which is empty!! to see the GP.
Turns out out ive got acute tonsillitis, and give me 2 weeks supply of
antibiotics there and then. No waiting for a chemist the next day!
All i felt is that between the three of them, NHS Direct A&E & the GP, was
a ***** waving contest, as to who called the shots.
When youve turned up at one of the 3's request, you would expect the
others to to help, not moan and bitch about what the other is doing.
And they wonder why our health service is struggling

TBH i dont why anyone would phone their local GP in an emergency/case of medical advie needed ??
Missus always phones NHS direct who if needed will then TELL the GP to phone/act,there responce is always better in this method as its logged via the nhs direct system and they cant fob you off,or nhs direct will get the medics round etc
whenever i go to my GP for anything i always come away with the classic methods are best, hot water/steam yourself etc etc hmm

Just out of interest, I just went on my local hospitals website, and was greeted with the following information.
Just seemed relevant.
Hope you feel better soon. As for not calling in sick. Its very noble and all, but in reality if you have the virus all you will do is spread it to everyone you come in contact with.
Winter Vomiting Bug Update (17/02/2010)
During the recent norovirus outbreak in London that also affected many London hospitals, we closed Lewisham Hospital to all general visitors, in order to protect our patients from the spread of this illness. We were very pleased with the successful control of the diarrhoea and vomiting outbreak in the hospital, and on 11th February general visiting times at the Trust were able to be re-opened from 3pm-8pm. However, the Health Protection Agency has advised us that there is more norovirus in the community now than at any time since 2006, and we are now seeing a second wave of this illness. Over the past 24 hours we have seen a sudden increase in the number of patients coming into hospital with diarrhoea and vomiting.
If you are experiencing diarrhoea and/or vomiting symptoms we advise you to telephone your GP or NHS Direct on 0845 46 47

I think those emergency doctors are shipped in from other countries and there can even be a bit of a language problem.
Haven't forgotten that doctor who gave a bloke with kidney stones a painkiller doe which was ten times the max dose and it killed the poor bloke. He was from Germany I think.

you both eaten the same food?
sounds like when i had food poisening, was ok till the night then all hell broke loose, didn't eat for 5 days and lost stone and a half, even after getting back to eating and drinking again.
best advice is make sure you can keep water in mate, if you can't then get to the hospital, sod the GP, they wont be able to do much bar kick you to the hospital anyway if you can't hold water
