why not turn ignition off.
this was on the news last night and they were warning ppl to put into neutral and apply the brake hard. then the handbrake and if that doesnt work turn igniton off.
im sorry but if it doesnt want to brake just turn car off anyway with foot on clutch. how hard????? coast to a stand still

brings new meaning to the phrase "the car in front is a Toyota"
thank fvck for that as you certainly would not want one behind you
I'm not sure of the time line re this incident -- but i did have a time when my load pedal became stuck in some carpet (in an old Volvo) -- and it does take a while to work out what the fvcks going on
but any more than ten seconds is stupid

Electronics might be a key factor here. I know there are some very dim people out there but this guy was apparently a traffic cop so surely he knew the score.
Lets assume the car was keyless and the autobox wouldn't go into neutral. That leaves standing on the brakes at speed and putting the handbrake on as the best options left.
From the report on the vehicle and the condition of the brakes it suggests he did just that. I think modern Toyota vehicles that use a starter button can be turned off by pressing the button for 3 seconds. Maybe he never knew this? It will maybe be something made clear on the dashboard before long and not just in the manual.
It is easy to sit here and think people really are stupid but he might have tried everything before calling and good old fly by wire prevented him doing what appears so simple in older cars?

Was a courtesy car and not his own.
I've sat in a dark underground car park, unable to work out how to engage reverse in a hire car.
Also yanking the handbrake on at high speed is not necessarily a very safe thing to do either

did you see the the lexus driver, got to 120 mph ????? why was he going so fast initially ?
I reckon he chanced it as a court/legal pay out case, using the phone call as evidence.
modern cars are that good, you'd probably walk away from an accident.
place yr bets now .......
