Default "Have YOU taken out a loan or a credit card in the last 5 years?"

I'm sure we've all had these calls?

Today, my youngest got one on his mobile, he was quite excited since they told him they could get him £900 back if he just fronted them £200.

Now I've told him it's almost certainly a scam, but hey, what do I know? I'm only his dad.

Can anyone point me at any links to show the problems caused by these types of companies?
TIA.

Just tell him that apparently not one company has ever successfully claimed any of this stuff back.

Can't say I've had one myself, but it sounds just like a Nigerian 419 scam: someone offers you money, but you just "have to" (for some reason) give them money first.

Register with the TPS, and if that doesn't help, Roger's Profanisaurus just might

The whole thing started out with insurance protection.

I've a friemd who "needed" a loan maybe a couple of years ago
She went to Alliance & Leicester and I get the impression she was pretty much given no choice with regards to insurance.
She did need the money, but they basically left it - no insurance then no money.

I heard about this whole thing late last year and I helped her write to the *******.

They fannnied around a bit, but she ended up getting her payments refunded in full for insurance and ended up with nearly £700 quid back.
Loan balance obviously reduced and is paying £25 or £30 per month less.

The whole PPI thing is a bit different to this though.

I had 2 loans and got £1600 and £900 off the 2 loans back for being sold PPI incorrectly, firstly I was 18 and naive but I asked the question if it would effect the outcome if I opted out and told yes it would, that was a lie therefore mis-sold.

Also the redundancy thing... yes, yes we will pay your loan if you out of work blah blah... turned out had to be unemployed for 12 months first before I could claim and on a 2 year loan again thats a bit crap.

Anyway was nice having the lump sums given back. So the PPI stuff is genuine.

This credit card thing sounds a scam though.

It's huge "business". I know of a company which has gone from ~10 staff to ~80, all chasing miss-sold PPI claims.

Beware, they are just trying to get you bank details (account number/sort code)
The last ranom call that i answered had the person talking with an Asian accent and claiming he was Billy Smith.
I said more like Gupta Singh now **** off.

See my thread here about a similar "scam".

Any company wanting money up front to do this is dodgy IMO.
