Default driving in the snow and ice?

have you guys been using your imprezas through this cold weather? how do they handle the snow and ice, especially on untreated country roads?

Cool

I had a Turbo and a Sti (in a previous life ) and they were woeful in the snow!

Loads of power and big fat tyres do not make for good snow driving! You could pick up speed incredibly quickly, but braking or turning a corner were big no no's!

My wife's Citroen C1 is much more fun

I had a 2005 STI and it was Sh!te in the snow.

The current Golf is better.

They handle fine.
Good quality winter tyres on all round - if not stay at home.
Pull the ABS fuse
Nice and gentle with all the control inputs

The main problem in the UK is untreated roads and most of the others on Summer tyres.
So personaly I would avoid the roads in the UK if poss.

I'm not talking about being the next Petter Solberg

I was thinking more along the lines of finding grip to get up the hill to my house and still having a car that is fun to drive once the weather is better

I also keep looking at the Evo 6

the other real option is the big 4x4s like Range Rovers,shoguns,Discoverys..etc etc but they really don't appeal to me

You wouldn't happen to be Chris from Pistonheads would you? If so, stick to your quad bike!

I'm also Scott W on there as well.... tend to lurk though, however, we did the first run down the A339/A31/A32 run a few years back together (blue & white Gixer 750).

mate they are fine in this weather as long as you don't think you are the next colin mcrae, i'm running on goodyear f1's at the minute as that was what on a set of alloys i bought a couple of months ago. everyone on here says they can't turn a wheel in snow but i was plowing on past all these other 4wd that were getting stuck with ease.

With the right tyres theyll be excellent (better if youve got an STI RA V-Limited with a mechanical front diff too). Virtually every every Impreza has the wrong tyres though.

*awaits 'I thought Imprezas handled well?' comments that come every winter, after a crash*

Never driven one with proper winter tyres on it, i do feel the ABS on them is far to aggressive, i do wonder if the AWD maybe makes them a bit easier to swap ends when coming down the gears.

The current FWD charriot, even on its crap 18" tyres seams far easier to drive in the snow, it seams much better tracking in a straight line, and the abs does not seam to be aggressive to the point of uselessness. (not convinced that's spelt correct, but firefox thinks its fine lol)

I did spend quite a lot of money on the impreza chassis improving it, so maybe it had a detrimental effect on snow control, but i cant remember driving it in the snow when it was stock, apart from the ABS being gash

A lot of it is also understanding how to find grip on a snowy road, using cambers. When fresh snow can help you grip or when it will make you slide. How you get more grip the colder it gets.

It all comes down to experience.

Wide tyres do make it difficult though!

Sure do - still got the same one! Now own a kit car with a Blade engine in it which seems to get used a bit more than the bike does though and when I can muster the energy/will to I'll join one of the SAS runs (I'll have to introduce myself to that first though! )!

Fantastic, the SAS lot are a great bunch

how long have you had a Subaru for?

I am looking to replace my trusty car with something AWD and fun, I have joined a few other Impreza forums to help me get as much info as possible ahead of making a decision as to what car to buy next

That's not really fair though, is it?

The F1 car is on compacted snow/ice, and doesn't even leave tracks (even when dough-nutting) - it just bumps along on a hard surface.

And the Ferraris have studded tyres, which would be pretty useless (and possibly illegal) on UK public roads as it is unlikely that your entire journey would be on snow/ice.

The Porsche was impressive though

And it all looks great fun

I'm sliding more than I want to, but leaving big gaps and being careful is hopefully enough .. if the Impreza is going to slide then unless I'm in a tank, I'm sliding no matter what I drive..

Still quite a few nut jobs on bikes about ..

The Discovery is great in this weather Series II V8 - lovin' it! Much more fun than the Scoob
Feeling it squirm around with the traction control light lit up under full throttle (only in a safe place of course )
Just off to Tesco now... because I can

Have fun guys...

Those are most likely winter Tyres

And the F1 car is on the widest safest possible layout - just incase, so thats hardly "real" world

Wide low profile tyres are far from idea on the slushi type stuff we have here.

I've just ordered some studded tyres for my bicycle.

It's either that or walk 90 minutes to work.

Luckily I can use a cycle route which is no were near a road to get in.

I've no intention to use the beemer.

I'm a bit curious, don't UK laws force you to use proper winter tyres? Here in Sweden you must use winter tyres 1 december to 31 march if it's winter condition on the roads.

I would never in my life consider driving on regular summer tyres when it's winter. It's just dangerous.

My XR4x4 is far better in these conditions than my Scoob (94 Legacy) ever was

That might be something to do with the half ton of iron nailing the front down while the back struts it's stuff

we have snow socks for both our cars, although I prefer not to use my car at all in bad conditions tbh

AutoSock/Auto Sock. The Textile wheel cover for Driving in Ice and Snow.Auto Socks get you Home!

FWD and 285bhp-400nm doesn't not like the snow very much with or without snow socks

I've owned my Scooby for a little over 9 years now. My wife drives it now as I've got a ST220 but it's now got to the stage we don't want to sell it as it's not worth too much money. Besides which, it's part of the family now!
