Gerbil's
Just got two Gerbils for the kids, I was not sure about it at first (look a bit like rats) but I must admit there great really lively jumping about and chewing on everything. Very hypnotic to watch.

Nice choice.
Freddie's one was a Hamster.
Jerboas aka DR. The name upset the locals, being compared to rats, which are actually nice pets too, but enormous compared to a little Gerbil. People hate the name Rat though and it puts them off, shame.
When i was at Animal College, i only got bitten twice, once by a Hamster (nocturnal) and once by a Rabbit in phantom pregnancy which become very aggressive anyway. We were supposed to breed them but someone released my Gerbils while i wasn't there.
Another idiot accidentally emptied a litter of baby Rats into the bin, they were fine though, as we turned the bin upsidedown and found them one by one. Little pink things with eyes still closed, had to be careful not to put any scent on them, as Mum would abandon them or even see them as food.

we have 2 gerbils, they are a year old now (they live to about 2). they are a great pet and as a desert animal do no pee much and therefore do not smell like most rodents. they love chewing on loo rolls also so remember to save these.
watch out for cables though if you let them run about as they love to chew these!

That's how i got bitten by the grumpy Hamster. We had to clean them out during the daytime and they like to sleep then. i was told to pick him up using a cardboard loo roll holder and scoop him up in it covering both ends with my hands, he decided otherwise and nipped me at both ends couldn't really blame him, they all woke up at dusk.

I had a couple of gerbils years ago. I set up a large glass tank (a large old aquarium with a failed seal I got for free) full of peat with some straw in it with a couple of Rotastak sections on top of it. The gerbils would make tunnels and a nest in the peat (put some bedding material in one of the Rotastak sections and they will move it into their little nest).
It is a very natural set up for them, very educational for kids and it worked well as they are dry and don't smell. It would seem that about once a month they would completely dig out their nest and tunnels and make some new ones.

greatgonzo, you obviously cared for them.
My sister found a rabbit in her garden and later found out the owner had buried her alive. the following morning she'd had nine little furballs. She kept them all with mum.
