Anyone watching The Triffids on BBC?
If so can you tell me why the people who make things like this have characters who make the most infuriating and stupid decisions?

I'm grabbing a torrent of both parts at the moment. I've got the 1981 version the BBC did on DVD and it does bring back memories as I watched it when younger and it's slightly cheesetastic today, but still not at all bad, so I am curious to see how the latest version stacks up to it.
I did originally misread the thread title as being "The Tripods" rather than "The Triffids" and thought they had embarked on another remake of a yet another cheesetastic but not too bad series from the 80's (alas they never made the third part of the trilogy )

Didn't seem to be many sighted people e.g. night shift workers, all the kids asleep, 50% of the world where its night, everyone travelling on the underground, etc., etc.

My thought was, and I'm not sure if the book states this or not, that if you took even a quick, lets say 20 - 30 second look at the meteor shower then your sight is fecked. If that is the case then it'd make a little more sense, as if you saw a group of people looking up, or it mentioned on TV, you'd have a quick look up and wham, you're effected by it.
Obviously does not help with the daylight part of the world, but I'm never sure how long the shower went on for, it could have been around for say 24 - 48 hours, thus allowing for it to be seen by the whole planet.

I thought he said it lasted 3 minutes - or started at 3 minutes past 12.
If that had happened there would be more people who could see and indeed those on the planet on the dark side - I assume that if it was bright enough to blind people on the dark side, those on the side facing the sun would be toast!
Still, a good program nonetheless. The US TV companies would do well to look at the way the BBC make short 3 or 4 episode stories rather than multi season shows that get cancelled if the ratings drop more than 0.01 of a percent.

thought it was pretty good tbh - also in HD, which was nice
Had forgotten all about the Tripods - really enjoyed that as a kid.
We spent most of the day/night watching 24 series 7 on Sky 2. The whole thing

In the first episode on monday the storyline went along the lines of :
"the triffids were farmed for their oil and thus saved the world from global warming "
good old BBC

No such thing. It's a Trialmaster jacket. Couple of years ago you could pick original examples up for peanuts on Ebay. Not any more. I think the one's tagged 'legend' are modern reproductions.
And yes it was rubbish. Don't know why the BBC is allowed to waste taxpayer's money on crap 'drama' like this. It should not be a part of their remit at all IMO.

I must say with the talent on the cast list it should have been a much better drama. Given that only one Triffid Oil plant seemed to be infiltrated by a Deliverance type eco warrior (500 plants?) they seemed to eat most of the 65 million population quite quickly as everywhere appeared deserted.
The plot was so bad I half expected David Tennant to pop up somewhere with a sonic screwdriver, he seems to be in all the other BBC shows this Christmas.

I've just finished watching it. Not too bad. I liked Eddie's performance, campy and creepy in equal measure.
I also like the fact that the triffids get out because of some moronic eco-warrior type, just like 28 days later where the animal liberation nutters let out a rage infected animal, and I really do believe that these morons will one day do something as insanely stupid as this and cause us a lot of grief, hopefully not as cataclysmic as portrayed, but it'll cause problems.
