Default Car to Car comms

Any suggestions on what would make a good car to car comms system?

Mobile phone great but needs signal and can become costly
Walkie talkies - tried and failed not sure if we need to buy more expensive ones.
CB radios - ? are these still around? are they anygood?

Stick with the mobile phone idea if just 2 people, get a bluetooth handfree kit fitted for £120 and you're well away!

I do it all the time, there are plenty of tariffs where calls to same network or nominated people are free.

Considering how cheap hands free car kits are (especially in relation to car value) it amazes me how many people still hold a phone to their ear. Law aside, I just couldn't be bothered to hold the phone while driving

Handsfree not a problem as normally have OH in car to do the talking although I am looking at fitting a new radio and bluetooth is a priority. My main issue with mobiles is the signal and cost....

What distance? I have some American Walkie Talkies that have a 19 mile radius. The reality is that they do work for a mile or so in the car / around the city.

I would hope we would be within 1-2 miles of each other most of the time.
We are going on a road trip to scotland so mobile coverage will be limited and radios should have clean air.

Does any one on here use CB's? I do not want to spend £100+ on something which does not work as i can but some nice upgrades for the same money.
