Default How does ebay bidding work, highest bidder etc ?

I won an ebay auction earlier, my highest bid was £149.98 which i placed with seconds to go and thats the amount i paid when i won the auction.

I looked at the bid history after the auction had ended and the next highest bidder was £141.40, i thought when you outbid someone it only goes a few pence over the highest bidder and not a gap like £8.58p.

How exactly does the bidding work on ebay, ive won ebay auctions in the past where ive put a higher amount in and out bid someone near the end yet ive paid far less than my highest bid when the auction was over.

Yep, the most you could have paid was £151.40, so effectively anything under this is money you've "saved" but anything over £141.41 was money "wasted", because over £100 as Paul said the bidding goes up in £10 increments. It's always nice when your maximum bid is only just higher than the second-best bid, i've won things by a 2p margin before!

£1.01 - £5.00 £0.20
£5.01 - £15.00 £0.50
£15.01 - £60.00 £1.00
£60.01 - £150.00 £2.00
£150.01 - £300.00 £5.00
£300.01 - £600.00 £10.00
£600.01 - £1,500.00 £20.00
£1,500.01 - £3,000.00 £50.00
£3,000.01 and up £100.00
