Potatoes: wtf is happening?
I've been pealing spuds for some years now, and I have NEVER seen such poor quality spuds
It doesn't seem to matter whether I buy premium quality, supermarkets general quality, reds, whites, cara, king edward, desiree, maris piper, supermarket, side of the road, market, greengrocer, they ALL have huge numbers of cuts, scabs, black and brown bits and bruises
WHAT has happened to the nice white spuds of my youth?

I know what you mean, they don't last very long either. Must have been the weather this year - no joke! (Nothing to do with climate change however!)

Its been quite a poor year for growers.
In fact one of the largest in the UK has just acquired a load of new land with the aim of providing better growing conditions.
Prices are also down, so the growers reduce staff and cut corners.
HTH.

Its the dry autumn weather mate, the fields were very dry which means the potatoes suffer more mechanical damage on the harvesters ( less wet soil to cushion them) so more cuts and bruises. You will also find more disease as the warm weather doesnt alow them to be chilled down in store as easily.
