Oh what an exciting life I lead.... So after 2 years and 1 month, 30 days after the warranty ran out my £400 hotpoint broke.
The filter got clogged up, flooded the machine, got into the PCB and made a big pop sound.
So I am after a new machine, What do you guys use? Should we go for a washer dryer? What brand is going to have a life longer than 2 years?

Bosch are tops of the reliabilty polls. www.electrical123.co.uk are usually very good prices, free delivery within 48 hours and you can get some cashback too if you order via Quidco.

We have got an LG direct drive washer and it’s great, it’s a good 5years old now and is still going strong.
What ever you get make sure it is direct drive its SOOOOO much quieter, at 1600RPM I can still hear the TV in the kitchen over the washing machine (which is also in the kitchen)

she wouldn't be happy with a direct drive washer then as the vibrations are greatly reduced as well as the noise..............so only get a direct drive washer if you don’t get off on your washing machine, else get a conventional one, with the concrete removed for added effect

Clogging in our washing machines is usually from doing loads of 40 degree washes. .
The detergent coagulates in the bottom of the sump and pipe of the machine and in the waste pipes. It got so bad all the waste pipes from the machine had also clogged to the point it overflowed. I had to remove each section and manually scrub out all the crud with an old bog brush
Running an empty boil wash (with no detergent) every few weeks helps keep it clear, and prevent it happening - it also says that in the machine's manual. (bit late now though)
(switch to 30, yeah f**k that,its bad enough running on 40
)

I had some gunky half powder, half fabric conditioner mould growing behind the dispenser, so i can only imagine how bad the rest of the machine inside was
Ran a 60 degree wash with loads normal malt vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer, and for comedy sake i put a plain black t-shirt in, and it came out covered in grey sludge
Cleaned everything up as best as i could, and now we add a cupfull of distilled white vinegar to each load at 40 degrees, and it seams like it has worked a treat
