Deaths confirmed

No numbers yet, hope they are very low, and no more of the tsunami will make land fall.

Seems that so far things have been quite mild. Lets hope it stays that way. Still some conflicting stories, but 3 confirmed dead and 50 injured so far. But we know these things can take a while to get the full story.

Yea watching it with interest here.

Fingers crossed it is mild and the world learned a lesson from Christmas a few years ago.

Seems the first death toll is approx 100 on 3 islands, but expected to rise.
Still a horrible number, but could have been so much worse.

The alert for the rest was cancelled quite quickly, which was a good thing.
Hope the clean up operation and rescues are done swiftly.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck Indonesia on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was recorded about 33 miles from Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra, which is home to more than 800,000 people.

Several buildings were damaged, Metro TV reported. People were seen running out of their homes and toward the hills.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami watch for Indonesia, India, Thailand and Malaysia.

NOAA could not immediately say whether the quake generated a tsunami, but such advisories are issued when a quake has the potential to cause one.

On Tuesday, a magnitude 8.0 quake -triggered tsunami killed at least 84 in the Samoan islands and Tonga
