The booze cruise.....
.....still a British institution or killed off by the £1 = 1Eur rate?
Reason I ask is I'm hosting a party at the end of November with around 120 drinking guests. Thinking of taking the old man's Volvo estate over to stock up on wine, Champagne, spirits, and some beer. Are there still bargains to be had, what should I be looking for?
Having looked a bit on the 'net seems like you can get a day trip crossing for around £30. Can save a few £ per bottle of champagne and maybe a £1 a bottle on the wine so does look like it would pay for itself?
That or save myself the hassle and order the lot from Tesco here in the UK?
Anyone still do regular trips over?

If you do go, take proof that you are hosting a party.
Customs may still confiscate the booze and, if they really need a boost to their power trip, your car as well.
They do not have to answer to anyone and do not have to justify their actions. "Above the law", I believe, is the correct term for customs.
Personally, I'd go to Tescos.

From HM customs very own web site, their recommended maximum before question would be asked:
That's 120 bottles of wine and a shed load of beer. Think the suspension on the Volvo might give out first!
Although there are no limits on the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring in from most EU countries, customs officers are more likely to ask you questions if you have more than:
* 3,200 cigarettes
* 200 cigars
* 400 cigarillos
* 3kg of tobacco
* 110 litres of beer
* 90 litres of wine
* 10 litres of spirits
* 20 litres of fortified wine (for example port or sherry)

Figure in your fuel on top of the crossing and you'll not save much. Having said that, there are often good offers on the ferries themselves, especially in spirits, and if you don't mind J P Chenet wine
Wine is often cheaper bought by the case, not by the bottle, in the French booze warehouses, and can sometimes be had like that in the supermarkets.
I haven't found Tesco at the tunnel particularly good value
I still find Eastenders at Calais the cheapest, although it gets scruffier
