3D movies
A quick question about modern 3D movies. I have never seen one yet and I have a simple question.
My son who is four next month loves films and has been going to the cinema with me regularly since he was three. He likes things like Wall E, Ice Age and Madagascar.
At the cinema the experience is much more involving so these films are at the threshold of his emotional ability. I suspect 3D would be one step too far.
If we go and see a 3D film now and remove the glasses can you still watch it - or is it like the old 3D and it goes all blurry?
He wants to go and see Toy Story 3D and Up 3D and I want to know whether if he finds it a bit too much he can take the glasses off and still enjoy?

Watched the latest final destination in 3D.As mentioned, its not like the old movies where you cant watch it without glasses.Without the glasses,it is slightly blurry-and appears as if there are 3 images very close to each other.
You cant polish a turd though and FD was still a bit crap!

what is the picture quality like on new 3D films? I cannot stand going to the cinema and seeing a blurry out of focus looking image which seems to be all the rage in most cinemas which makes me think if they can't get 2D looking alright whats the chances of 3D looking good!

We've watched a couple of animated films with the kids (age 7 and 4) at a proper 3d cinema. Quality was excellent and the 3d in places absolutely stunning. I especially liked the big open vista's which work well in 3d. Occasionally they tried to trick the audience with stuff that comes out of the screen at you. I found this only works in the centre of the cinema and only some of these effects actually seem real. Particularly action that happens very fast, seems to me that my old eyes/brain cannot process what is happening to believe it's actually popping out to 2 foot in front of your face. The slower 3d effects (the vista's) and my brain seems to cope with this more. Could be an age related thing though!
To the original question, my 4 y.o kept taking off the glasses in one of the films. Despite telling her to put them back on she seem to enjoy the film none the less. It is blurry, but she didn't seem to mind and followed the movie anyway.

Brilliant - I may try him with Ice Age 3 - 3D.
He has seen Ice Age 3 - 2D so he is already familiar with the film. He keeps asking to go and see 3D (which he thinks is the name of a film!!).

I expect he sees day to day in 3d like the rest of us so should get it, just depends on monsters, 2d or 3d getting a 3 year old to forget them is difficult, especially at bedtime.

It is also about the degree of engagement.
There are films that he will happily watch on his little TV at home.
On the home cinema he can get more overwhelmed.
At the cinema his 'peril' threshold is even smaller.
I suspect 3D would increase the peril as monsters jump 'out of the screen'.
We'll see!
