How far can you drive with no tax?
Reason I ask is that my car suffered a terminal big-end failure last month, and, being skint, I declared it SORN until I can afford to have it rebuilt, and, before that, exactly WHAT I want it rebuilt like
Anyway, the idea is that it will be trailered to a place that will rebuild it. I assume it won't need road tax for that? (However, knowing thieving Lying Labour it probably WILL)
Then it will need taxing, but to be taxed, it will need an MoT, which is now out of date. And getting a new one might be difficult away from home due to mods
So............can I have it rebuilt, then drive it home WITHOUT tax, in order to have it MoT'd and then buy the tax? Or will it have to come home on a trailer too?
Nowt's ever easy, is it?

If you can get the car booked in for an MOT just as long as your insured to drive the vehicle then its ok just as long as the distance isnt an unreasonable distance. but its only covered to get to the MOT station and not for any other use. or so my understanding of the rules are.

That's pretty much spot on. The insurance issue is the most important point.
Just remember to ensure it's actually booked in at the Testing Station as in the event of being stopped a phone call will be made

It doesn't need to be taxed to transport on trailer and IIRC you can drive a car to a prearranged MOT without a valid road fund licence, so you could drive it home and MOT it on the way.

personally I would have no quarms about driving an untaxed car under those circumstances
as long as I was insured and owned the car in question
nowadays its more a DVLA tax collection issue than a police enforcement one (imo)

Insurance / tax are only required if an English person is driving.
Have the car driven down to the workshop by either a Polish / Portugese person and it will be perfectly legal. Tax, Insurance, MOT arent required for these type of drivers. The only requirement for these drivers are, bald tyres, more than 6 people in the car and loud folk music belting from the stereo.

Dress code is another consideration. Stone washed jeans, pasiley shirts, straight cut leather jacket is a must, as are heavy gold chains, whilst smoking roll ups.
All this will confirm the origins of the driver, making any legal requirements null and void.

Might be cheaper to use the trailer.

I have been thinking about a similar question recently, my car is SORNed too and am hoping to get it back on the road soon too, my thinking is that if i was to get an evening time for the MOT could I drive it too work and then get it MOTed on the way home ? If i was stopped for on the way to work could I explain that I was "heading" to the MOT centre even through the MOT wasn't for 8 hours yet ?
Sorry Tanya for hijacking your thread but the two questions are similar.

they are more interested in the serial offenders
last year I totally forgot my tax had expired (despite driving around the business end of the M25 for two months of it)
when I eventually applied online --- it would not allow me to back tax it to the previous expiry date, so because the car was not sorn'd or taxed for a period of time the website gave me a message saying that I had committed an offence -- but I did not hear anything about it

Me, on the other hand was simply a lazy git who had all the paperwork but just didnt get round to doing it. I did get stopped once, they said the tax was out of date. I said I had it all with me and they said, well get it done, but now
Though next time, I see Simon has given his insightful advice as per the norm and in the future I shall be wearing said attire...cant fail to win

Agreed, but you can leave your car at the test centre for the day. If you get stopped on the way to work then just go to the test centre and leave the car there. Perfectly legal.
I wouldn't park on the street or in a public car park without tax. But if on private land all day then you should be OK.

Just spoken to DVLA: I can drive the car untaxed to a prebooked MoT, as stated by a few reponses on here. There isn't a limit to distance it can be driven, but they advised me if the MoT wasn't local to the place rebuilding the engine, to take some form of evidence that the car is booked for an MoT.
Sorted.
Sorted.

Did though, but he let me off when I said, "Well it was there when I set off, look, there are the bolts!".
