Bit of a nasty question but im curious...
Following the Marchioness accident it was discovered that hands of the deceased were removed for ID purposes.
Now I have googled it to hell but I cant find anything that clearly explains the reason for this method. The best I have found is...
Now I get that, but surely if fingerprints are needed, cant you just fingerprint them while they are attached?
There is probably a more than reasonable explaination, but I just cant work it out.

The practice was used for those found in the river outside the Marchioness, which sank after colliding with the dredger Bowbelle, to record fingerprints before the condition of bodies deteriorated.
There is probably a more than reasonable explaination, but I just cant work it out.

The bodies would have been bloated from the water. Maybe they had to dry the hands before the fingerprinted them. I cant answer this seriously
I have been laughing at something, not this

Hands are sometimes cut off and taken to more advanced laboratories if other attempts to take fingerprints fail.

I didnt think there was much of a delay finding all the bodies etc, so hadnt thought that "advanced" methods would have been needed.
Guess some were not found as quick as I thought.
Still seems wierd that they would not just take the whole body to do it.
Found on one of the searches that one pair of hands was left in a fridge for 4 years and forgotton about !

The rest of the body prolly went off to the morgue for further tests but they would have needed to take prints very quickly so they would have had to take the hands off. I doubt that they would have taken the whole body to have the prints taken. Not a nice thought though

Having done some work in this area I'm not sure if they would separate the hands in the first instance. The Government have a contingency plan to set aside refrigerated areas in case of multiple fatalities and are available at short notice.... Refrigerated lorries etc and includes ice rinks (as in the lockerbie disaster).
The various agencies involved spend an enormous amount of time to ensure that bodies are identified, kept together as much as possible....to ensure that they are buried / cremated etc according to their religies belief and that of the relatives.....
Snazy, If you want to look at forensic stuff and wonder what went on just google the Dingo Baby Trial..... and try and work out how the dingo managed to fold the removed clothing !

Cheers Shaun.
Thats kind of my line of thinking, and im guessing thats why there was a subsequent enquiry into it all. I realise a lot has changed in 20 years.
I shall have a look at what you mentioned, its always interesting to see how some facts are ignored for ease of life.
