Default Irish registered cars

I'm looking for a new car (well a couple of years old) and have found 1 on the AT website.
The car has been registered in Ireland and has an Irish plate on, the dealer says its not a problem as its a northern ireland number which is part of the UK?

If i buy this car would i have to register it for the uk?

No.

If it's from Northern Ireland then it's the same as buying it from Scotland or Wales.

Indeed

I recently had a NI number transferred to my car as I wanted something different. It's all within the same DVLA control I believe.

You WILL have to re-register it in the UK BUT you can keep the registration number.

For instance, I had a UK car & I wanted an NI plate (private), so went to NI and re-registered the car there, paid 6 month tax and received my new reg. Then when the tax expired, went down the Post Office & re-registered to my UK address and paid for a new tax.

You will only be able to run the car without re-registering from NI until the tax expires.

Why did I do it? Well because that meant I could get a "private" reg free. Obviously helped I had an NI address to register the car to.

Do make sure you get the vehicle licensing office in NI to mark the vehicle as permanently exported otherwise you heart will be broke every time you pass an ANPR unit.

As has been said, you can continue to use the NI plate.
