Whilst browsing through a couple of Cornish forums i was astounded at the hostility of Cornish people towards anyone other than the Cornish.

They dont see themselves as English although last time i looked Cornwall is actually part of England as is say Lancashire.

Also whoa betide anyone who asks a question about relocating to Cornwall - feckin' hell dont even go there. That is surely asking for a barrage of abuse and threats of having your home burned down.

All this crap about becoming independent from England, i mean what the hell is this all about? Surely the only thing keeping cornwall afloat is the tourism industry from the outsiders that the Cornish seem to hate so much.

So why are the English hated so much?

Thats the last time i buy a Cornish pasty and no mistake.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling it is/was something to do with the influx of people buying up property in the small cornish towns and not integrating with the local community, and thus causing bad feeling. I think it was the well to do who were doing this and probably being typical yahoo's and looking and talking down to the locals as though they were idiots.

I can understand this but what about folk who want to relocate and to actually live there, surely people moving to Cornwall helps the economy.

Think it's a lot to do with local people (i.e people who grew up in the county) can't buy houses due to others buying second homes in the area and pushing prices up, I would guess the average wage in the area is nothing compared to house prices.

I have to say i've spent many summer holidays there and never had any problem with locals, i've found them all very friendly, there's obviously a minority though who resent the tourists who fund their economy!

I moved away when I was 19 and only returned to Cornwall last year (now 39) and the number of second homes is crazy in some places. It means that local people are priced out of the village that they grew up in and also tat the village is like a ghost town in the winter. I can understand a certain amount of resentment, but I think that you'll find people as friendly as most places in the UK.
If you look a little closer then you'll find that the Cornish are Celts like the Irish and Scotish, so there is a (usually humorus) side of 'English invaders' to it!
Generally I've never had any problem with the Cornish or English and yes, I'm both!

Because until the 'English' turned up they were a very respectful people who could leave their doors open at night. And there were no bad things happening because everyone trusted each other. Men were courteous to each other and women.

Roses bloomed in the garden all summer, indeed life was a long summery idyll.

Parents taught their children respect and children behaved and if they didn't a sharp talking too from their parents, their teachers and the police soon sorted them out.

And then the rest of the English arrived and it all fell apart.

I think it is something to do with the Spanish Armada, some of them settled in Cornwal and the Cornish coluded with them. But because the Tower of London was full of other traitors at that time they got away with it.

I moved to Cornwall about 15 years ago. Never had a problem with the locals accepting me and never have since but then again, i never announced my arrival on Cornish forums, lol.

Maybe you just came up against some internet warriors who in person would be as nice as pie (or pasty).

I 100% agree with 2nd homes for people out of the county pushing up prices and making it harder for local people to buy. The average wage compared to house prices is ridiculous.


For 6 weeks of the year it IS annoying with the amount of people/traffic on the roads and unless you live here, people dont get the way of life. Its slow. People let you out at junctions and wave if you let them out.

When the "emmets" arrive all hell breaks loose. You cant visit the places you would normally without adding an extra 30mins to your journey and constantly getting road rage LOL.

But... if you avoid the HOT SPOTS for 6 weeks, you could get away with not even knowing things have gone crazy.

It is not only the buying of second homes business which upsets the locals but also the incomers who treat locals like an underclass and also try to change local habits and pastimes etc. to suit themselves rather than those who were there in the first place.

If you want to live somewhere new then you should have the good manners to fit in with those who were there in the first place.

But who sells their Cornish properties to the "English" in the first place, how do they fall into non Cornish hands, could it be Cornish people selling them at a premium price to those with the money to pay it ?

Moi....................? Never even talked to the guy. read a few of his posts but he never reaaly bothered me. kept me amused though. No, I am just adopting the stereotypical view of country yokels in general (totally unfounded of course). Watched "The Cottage" a couple of weeks ago. Films like that and others (e.g. Hot Fuzz) don't really put them in a good light.

IF the Cornish decided to sell within their own then the prices would be controlled and the villages would be full of green haired inbreds, just as they desire.
But they didn't, they thought they could make an extra £20/30k and smiled all the way to the bank.
Do not blame the English for moving in, blame the Cornish for moving out!

I've been to Cornwall a few times and i've found the people very accommodating and friendly so it came as a shock after reading through a few forums the negativity bordering on hatred towards Emmets.

Just stick my two penneth in as you know I love the place and would move down there in a heart beat if I could get enough business to work from home all the time.

Most of my friends down there do not mind the "Outsiders", or at least tollerate them for the sake of their economies. I have friends who's businesses would have folded a long time ago as they are utterly reliant on the tourist trade for their business. Those that have an axe to grind only grind that axe because of what happens during the school holidays when the rest of the country decend onto the cornish county like a plague of locusts and strip the place to within an inch of its life (this is also the reason I avoid going there during any school holiday) You only have to look at a Cornish beach during the summer holidays and then look a week later to see the difference, full to empty in a week! Having said that this does put a lot of money into the local economy.

The other reason is the second home owners. there are villages in Cornwall that are empty most of the time because most of the housing is owned by outsiders. A prime example of this is Polperro were nearly all the houses in the harbour area are second homes and occupied once in a blue moon. However you cannot lay the blame squarely on those buying these houses as the greed of the sellars does have something to do with it. Those selling know the house they live in will attract a premium price and sell accordingly. This means the only people able to afford it are more outsiders. Its a vicious circle. I mean locally, who in their right mind would pay 450K for a 2 bedroom fishermans house, even if they could afford it?

There is a trend at the moment for the second owners to offload their properties and this is reflected in the prices and the quantity of houses for sale at the moment. One of my friends works for a big estate agents and he said they could only just cope with the influx of new property requests after the New Year. This has pushed the price of housing prices down more than its gone down in the rest of the country.

I have never had a problem with anyone down in Cornwall and I go there alot. Hell I even watch South West news each night because its less depressing than the North West news!

I think though that some people go down to Cornwall on holiday and treat the Cornish people as they would treat, well anyone. The attitude of "i'm on holiday mate so **** you" Seen it while i've been down there and this is the reason I avoid certain holiday destinations and times of the year.

As for Cornwall being a seperate country, could they survive on their own? The counties expenditure must be greater than its income?

Those getting all aggressive on forums are probably the same self styled keyboard warriors which frequent ever forum across the land.

BTW shed dragging isnt just confined to the school holidays, and it doesnt matter what time of year we go down to Cornwall you can guarantee at some point your gonna get stuck behind some one towing a caravan

A friend of mine, owns one of of the best known estate agencies in Rock/Polzeath, when a local comes to sell a property my mate always says "well we can advertise it locally for X or we can advertise it nationally for Y (Y being 40% more than X)

mmmm they always end up advertising it nationally --- its a free market, we live in a free market economy so lump it or change the system -- that’s my view

The thing is if you were selling a property at say 300k and the agent said sell it nationally and you'd get 400k+ then you'd be stupid not to do it.

If you've ever had the misfortune to visit Polzeath during the school holidays with all the yar's will understand the locals hatred for outsiders.

Stuck up tw@ts who leave the beach in a right state, have no respect for anything or anyone and drink themselves stupid everynight, leaving bottles and cans all over the place.

Im not even Cornish but these type of people would **** me off regardless of where it was.
