Apparently it's ok, cos it's only a lagging indicator, according to PS Lewis.
I'm sure the 220k new to the rock 'n role queue will take some comfort in that

In the guise of PSL...
Only the last Tory reign had worse figures than that.
Ok I cant keep that up!
Apparently on the up side the figures are not as bad as expected.

It was much worse under the Tories ............. higher figure and on a much lower employment level - ie. there are more people employed in the UK now than have EVER been!

The number of people on Incapacity Benefit TREBLED under the Tories .... talking of fudging the figures!!
This sad legacy of the Tory years haunts us to this day, at least Labour have the ***** to allow the numbers to reflect reality .... honesty is Labours cornerstone, you lose that credibility with a Tory Government.
Sad - but true ...

Thing is it is still a way off Thatcher's best efforts whether you like it or not and that was at a time when the world was not in a recession and the population of the country was nowhere near what it is today.
Thing is neither the Tories or Labour are fit to govern this country. The fact that it will always be one of them that does so is pretty sad.

Nice one Pete
You forgot mention that people on incapacity benefit has gone up by 22 times under Labour, 67000 in 1997 to 1.5 Million in 2007.
Unlike Pete however, I offer this as evidence: Inactive Benefits: 4 Jun 2007: House of Commons debates (TheyWorkForYou.com)
Edit: I'm being generous to you Pete the BBC reckoned that there were 2.7M claimants in 2008: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7925448.stm

Last year government welfare adviser David Freud suggested that fewer than a third of the 2.7 million people claiming incapacity benefit, were legitimate claimants.
