You need to contact DVLA, you should have a local office. They will tell you which forms you need to complete. It will probably cost £105 and will end up back on its original reg number. It's pretty straight forward to get it off the car tho.

Ah, handy thread! Just about to do the same thing with the plate on my P1, how long does it take to get the old plate back on and all the paperwork completed?

Something like 24hrs. Our local one used to do a while-u-wait service but cherished numberplates became quite common so they dont have the time anymore.

You need to take your MOT, Tax Disc, V5 and they'll stamp the MOT and change the reg number on it, reprint your tax disc and (i think) send the log book off for you.

We have done it a few times this year, Took about 4 weeks for everything to be sorted. There is a form on the DVLA website that you need to complete then you send of a cheque with you documents and wait.......

Its a bit of a pain but only take 20 minutes to do the paper work.
DVLA Personalised Registrations

I think that's the bit you need to read.

Is it possible for you to do the transfer AND change of ownership at the same time?

You have to put the plate on retention, this will change your car back to its original plate. You will then have a certificate showing ownership of the number plate.
When you find a buyer for the plate you fill out the certificate thingy (when you have it you will see its not to hard, it all makes sense) and that changes ownership of the plate to the new nominee allocated on the transfer certificate.

If you sell the car with the plate still on it and send of the log book then you have sold ownership of the plate. You can ask the new buyer if they would transfer it over but legally you have sold it.

When you sell the car you can send of the forms at the same time and put the old plates back on the car, This will mean that for 14 days the car will be on PNC under the wrong plates but you get 14 days grace period if dealing with the DVLA.
I would recommend changing the plate before selling the vehicle, that way you can sell the car with the correct tax disc, MOT and V5.
