What would you do?
We recently bought 3 x 3GS iPhones (2 x 32GB for the Wife and I and a 16GB for the step-daughter)
The daughters boyfriend of a few weeks said how much he liked the iPhones and how he was going to save up to buy one. (You can see where this is going yet?)
To cut a long story short - On a late night drive home from a visit to the seaside, daughter was asleep on back seat and boyfriend was in the front seat with the iPhone plugged into the car stereo listening to tunes.
About 5 mins away from being dropped off at home (3AM) he unplugged the iPhone and chatted to the driver (my step-daughters dad).
He asked to be dropped off at the end of the street rather than the normal door to door service and hot-footed it off down the road (Unusual as he normally has a quick ciggy and a chat before going into his Grandparents house - He's 15 by the way)
10 minutes later on arrival at her dads house - Step-D wakes up and tries to find her iPhone - Nowhere to be seen.
A quick call to boyfriend to ask if he has it gets the "No" response.
They ask him to check the roadside where he was dropped off in case it fell out when he got out. He phoned back later to say there was no sign of it.
The following day he came for Sunday lunch at mine with my wifes elderly parents, my dad, my wife - You get the picture.
Anyway, Something about his behaviour raised my suspicions(sp) which I won't go into now as it's difficult to put into words.
I told him that I wasn't worried about finding the phone as it is fitted with a tracker - His face changed shape. (Coppers on here will know what I am talking about - as well as others no doubt)
He replied "Yeah but if the sim card has been changed it won't track it"
"Not a problem" I replied - the tracking chip is not related to the sim card it is inbuilt in the phone.
At this point there was a faint whiff of fear.
"But if the phone is switched off - It won't work, will it" he said
"Again, not a problem - The inbuilt chip polls the network on a regular basis using internal power regardless of whether the phone is on or not"
At this point there was a definate smell in the air.
He left about an hour later - given a lift with Step-D and her dad.
I called 15 mins after they left to say that Mobile me had pinpointed the phone to within 5 meters of his house (Complete lie as we hadn't enabled it)
Lo-and-Behold, the phone "Turns up" it apparently must have got stuck in his clothing somehow and ended up under his bed
Cheeky fekkir had the brass neck to then say he had tried his simcard in it to see if our blocking of it had worked and had accidentally wiped it clean when charging it up.
I put it to you, the ScoobyNet Jury, that this (now Ex-Boyfriend) is a thief and a liar and deserves some form of punishment.
Please can you cast your vote on whether you think he is guilty of trying to rob the iPhone OR if, as is also possible, he totally forgot he put the phone into his jeans pocket at 3AM whilst dashing off home, when he was phoned at 3.15AM and asked to check outside he didn't notice the phone in his pocket ( He actually said it must have fallen out of his jeans pocket when he got ready for bed - so he wouldn't have felt it)
I'll post a Guilty / Not Guilty Poll.
My request for replys is - If you think he is guilty of trying to steal the phone and only "Found" it after I blagged him about the mobile me tracking thing - what punishment should he face?

Not much you can do officially and anything you might consider doing unofficially would be best kept to yourself and certainly not discussed on a public site.

Have a "mano a mano" talk with him along the lines of "if I ever thought you were thieving or thinking of thieving then you/me would have a talk in a nice quiet place" etc.
You obviously have him bricking it already, so a gentle discussion on the "dangers" of being a naughty boy and even if something happesn around him of which he is innocent but possibly him both gives him lots of scary images and marks his cards - he knows, you know, he know you know and now he has some extra things to think about if he were to even think about being light fingered...

Pikey chav scum - I'd get a couple of big mates to bundle him into the boot, drive him into the wilderness and dump him somewhere in just his pants and let him walk home.
On a similar note - my young cousin has just turned 16, and is into his phones. He was round a mates house with his new phone, when a mate of his mate who he didnt know came round, chatted for a bit, then grabbed the phone off the table and legged it.
Apart from anything, how did he think he was going to get away with it when it was pretty obvious it was him who had stolen it ???
Unfortunately by the time they found him the phone had gone, but he was given a beating for doing it.

Excellent idea, kidnapping a minor. Some serious bird available for that I'd imagine.
Definitely sounds like he was on the blag, punishment depends on what his parents are like I suppose, if they are decent you could let them know what happened and hope they deal with him accordingly. Any other actions are likely to just land you in hot water.

Yes he is obviously guilty as hell! I had to smile at your clever way of sorting him out. He does not deserve to get away with it but I don't think you would be able to prove his guilt.
Don't know what his parents are like but an approach to them might make them teach him the lesson that he needs.

As said above man to man chat with a few life pointers putting the fear of god and possible future problems in his mind, after all he is only 15 i know he should be old enough to know better but teenages do push the boundaries to find the breaking points and need bringing back into line when necessary.

Thief.
I'd have strong words with him and say you're going to report it to the police so he gets a record or at least a black mark against his name. If he's a decent kid, that should do it. If he's not then have stronger words, telling him you don't want to see him anywhere near your step-daughter again.

As someone else said, serious time could be served for this. My brothers neighbour did this with a burglar he caught and was given 12 months, serving 3. It was the minimum the judge could pass under the regulations, and he was apologetic at having to do so as he agreed with the guys actions, but rules is rules If you're gonna do anything like this, it must involve a lime pit

How do you know its his first offence?? Grab him and put the fear of god into him.
But whatever you do dont tell us all that you've tied him up and set him on fire in local woods then buried him in horse poo!!
