TVs again - what would you guys recommend
Hi there all,
OK simple request here.
Requirements:
37 or 42 inch plasma or LCD
1080p full HD
Pic quality more important than sound which will be run through a separate system.
So what is my best option?

Panasonic all the way I don't own one but I work with tv's all day for a living. Standard def is cracking HD Is superb.
Samsung is hit And miss , I see quite a few faulty ones. Normally faulty power supply/board

Depends on budget really. I got a Panasonic PX80 last year for £600, had some retention to start with but is ok now, really good TV for the money, PS3 looks realy good on it.
I'm Looking at TVs for a friend at the moment and after looking all over the best I've found for his budget are the following.
Panasonic x10(new version of my px80) not a 1080p but very good picture still especially when they are less than £600 now, good with sd and at arnd 3m lack of 1080p on the 42" isn't noticeable....to me anyway
Panasonic G10 is a 1080p and has some excellent reviews good contrast and blacks etc. Probably the best plasma for the price at around £800.
Samsung lcd 40b650 seems to be the best lcd at £750-900.
I have an LG 32" lg3000 lcd in my bedroom and its very good for the price, I paid £350 but think you can get them under 300 now, so if you want a cheap 32" I recommend it...apparently its the same screen as the equivalently priced Samsung but cheaper by £50.
Personally I like plasma over LCD for the following reasons.
Better for films
Better blacks (though the Samsung 650 seems to be very impressive)
Colours are more natural
Better for sport due to better handling of motion.
Actually finding them better for games too(usually lcd is recommended for games)
LCDs are comparably more expensive over 37" though this is changing
Better viewing angles.
LCDs are better for bright rooms, and some say better for games as they are brighter and more vibrant. LCDs also do smaller screens, don't have retention problems (not too bad with plasmas now and not burn in as some try to have you believe)
Also plasmas have phosphor trails that a minority of people can see so have no choice but to have LCD.
Your best bet is to look for yourself really, just don't be fooled by the apparently better appearance of lcds in the shops, plasmas look much better when you get them home.
I've deliberately kept my post quite short, there is so much I could go into but I'd only be repeating what's already out there, your best bet like I say is to go look for yourself, look on the Forums and check the reviews at HDTV Guide - LCD & Plasma Review AVS Forum AVForums.com Home HDTV.org has really good reviews and avforums is a good place to get info from.
Some people prefer lcd and others plasma so try to avoid the fanboys as they spread a lot of miss-information about both techs.
Good hunting.

poo, prob a hit of 300 then for me paid 650 for it last year, really nice set just not happy with the blacks was expecting better, the G10 looks really black, but then I haven't seen it in a dark room....and it costs a lot more....sorry to go away from op but has anybody with a px80 or pz think the screen looks too bright in a dark room? to be expected from a plasma to some degree, but thought it would have bedded in more after 12 months.

I may be off there but check AV forum for recent sales as that should give you an idea what it would fetch.
I have the PZ80 so the 1080p version of yours. The blacks are good... well I'm happy.
What picture setting do you have it on? I use Cinema and Warm for the colour. If you use Dynamic then you deserve all you get

Thanks folks. This is what SN is all about. I know I could have gone to the AV Forums, but things get a bit **** over there. I am I admit an audiophile, but for TV I just want something decent to buy, use and forget about.
I think the Panasonic G10 sounds like the one to go for.
Keep the info coming though. Cheers again!

Indeed no that went off when the set went on....did the usual 200 century thing and it has calmed down over the months, also in normal light or when displaying a picture the blacks do look good, I'm prob being picky.
Settings wise I have tried all sorts, the girlfriend can testify to that lol. Think I'm happy with the settings now.
Set it up around the same as the HDTV setup in the end, on normal and cinema with warm (warm looked so odd to start with but deff worth sticking with, especially on cinema). I ended up having the contrast just over half way, and then adjusted the brightness until the black border started to brighten and then went back one. Sharpness at 0 as suggested is crp with the px80 so have it on 2-3 occasionally 4 if the mood takes me. Used a really good pic I have to help me set it up, along with ice age2, iron man and batman, oh and cars. Also played with the PS3 settings(full RGB etc)
The screen still looks a bit bright on a blank AV in a dark room, but then the lg lcd I have is a lot brighter.

Yes, the TV has a faulty pixel ..... but I got all my money back.
The problem was with CURRYS not really the TV - even with a faulty pixel it STILL is a cracking picture quality .... far better than the Panasonics I have seen.
I buy with my eyes, not with a mind to a name ... or what someone else says

Yeah this is the main point.. buy one that YOU like. It's good to hear other peoples feedback but it's you who has to live with tv. I wouldn't judge a picture based on a tv feed in a shop though personally. I found in the shops the LCD's caught my eye first due to their brighter picture but the plasmas soon showed they had more depth in the picture. Personal preference is the main thing.
