Hi guys,
I'm buying a DVD player tonight and need some suggestions as I know NOTHING!
Im planning on buying the player today and plugging it into my stereo amp for the time being, but log term aim is to get a dedicated amp and surround speakers etc.
Want to spend 150 - 200 quid, any tips, suggestions or warnings?
Any manufaturers to avoid? Special features to look for?

Do make sure you get a machine that's multi-region compatible, which many models (especially those sold in high street electrical chains aren't). If you don't, you'll only be able to play discs that are sold in Europe, which are usually released later than the rest of the world, cost more and have fewer features.
With a multi-region model, you can easily order discs over the Internet from around the world, getting them sooner and cheaper. America gets things first, and Australia is often cheapest.
Andy.

If you want a half decent player and want to be able to play from cdrs and mp3 audio through your hifi as well, check out the scan sc2500 - http://www.scan.co.uk/sc2500.htm
Its got built in processing so you can plug into existing speakers and get 5.1, has dts, plays every format under the sun, is region and RCE free and its only £150!!!
I changed my £600 worth of sony 725 for one last week (as the sony would not play cdr etc) and havent noticed any degredation in picture or sound quality (runnin through big amp tho) tho the build quality is not as good (feels and looks a bit cheaper, but it is!!

If you can stretch another £30, try the Pioneer DV-444 which at around £230 (Sevenoaks) is the multi region version. Running audio through my stereo amp and it sounds fantastic and may not bother with an av amp/rear speakers etc.
well recommended

Hello
I've played with the Tesco one (£100) and the one from Safeway (£140). They are both great value and can be hacked to be multi-region (from CDR or handset), and play VCD, MP3's as well.
I bought the Safeway one in the end.

I have the old Pioneer 525 which is about 2 years old now and it has played everything Ive chucked at it without a hitch. Multi-region is a definite must, region 1 dvds are cheaper, released sooner (some are out before they even get in the cinema here) and usually tend to have more features and less bits cut out.

Thanks for all the help!!
I played safe and bought the Toshiba SD210E - only one of the suggestions that my local Richer Sounds had in stock.
Cost was 230 euros (142 squid) per player for two with a gold plated scart lead thrown in.
I played safe and bought the Toshiba SD210E
Not quite sure how to get the best sound with my setup, though - I plugged it straight into the CD input on my HiFi amp.
I've connected it with audio leads, but the sound through the video/SCART (Video audio out goes into the Aux input of the same HiFi amp) is 'better' than direct.
This is clearly not right - any settings or tricks I should know about?
