Question What Fish To Start With?

Thinking about getting a fish tank.

We've never had one and wondered what fish would be best to start with?

We've a pond wi koi, shubumpkins, frogs etc in it and just fancy a tank.

Looking at either tropical or marine.

Whatcha think?

Agree with above - start with tropical, starting out with marines can result in a bad experience due to inexperience.

Buy the largest tank you can afford / accommodate. It will need less maintenance, and if things go wrong, they happen more slowly in larger volumes of water.

Forget about under gravel filtration go for a cannister filter or external filter.

Fish wise - there is lots of choice depending on weather you want to keep a community of fish or a single species. Buy small healthy specimens and watch them grow and dont make any sudden changes, fish keeping is a lesson in patience, good things happen slowly, the bad stuff always happens more quickly!!!

Buy the biggest tank you can afford, external filter (again the bigger the better).Once you have it all set up do NOT put fish in until the nitrate, nitrite and ammonia levels are zero. This is called the "cycling process".To speed this process up a bit you can add a small amount of fish food to the water every day.Once all readings are ok the best fish to get for a beginner are, neons, zebras, gouarmis, dwarf catfish, swordtails, platys.Mollies are ok too but be prepared to soon have babies swimming around.
