Why is diesel cheaper than petrol now?
I can remember last year diesel was 14p a litre more than petrol, lately it has come right down though with some places selling it at the same price.
Today however I saw a garage selling petrol at 102.9 p a litre and diesel 101.9p a litre.
Has demand for diesel dropped, or were the just bending us over and royally shafting us last year?

Probably a bit of both.
Diesel is always cheaper on the continent, in France, over Whit, 98 octane was €1.25, 95 octane was €1.24 and diesel was €0.96, so at €1.10 to the £, we were paying £1.13.6, £1.12.7 and £0.87 per litre.
And just look at THEIR price difference between 95 and 98 octane: 1 cent so less than 1p per litre
AND 98 octane is available at 99.9% of garages, even tiny little one-pump supermarkets
Over here, remember, Labour have turned a blind eye to petrol companies profiteering: the higher the pump price, the more HMG rakes in in VAT

It's loss will have had zero effect on them, as there are others they can use.

The general price rise is nothing to do with the Hemel fire or petrol company "profiteering".
Oil prices are rising due to;
The value of the £ sliding against the $ - oil is priced in USD don't forget.
OPEC are doing their "thing" again and cutting back on productionto maintain their margins.
Speculator activity in the oil market is pushing the price up again.

I may be totally wrong on this but I think this is along the right lines.
A barrel of crude oil will naturally yield certain proportions of petrol, lubricating oil, diesel, etc. It is possible to get a higher proportion of a particular product from the barrel but this is expensive. Diesel comes from the range of the barrel that also produces heating oil so this fraction can be made into either heating oil or diesel. It's summer in the northern hemisphere so demand for heating oil drops therefore more diesel is produced. More diesel being produced = lower prices (relative to petrol).
Diesel being much cheaper than petrol on the continent is entirely down to different tax treatment.

See the opening para of the below report - in petro economic terms Diesel is cheaper to produce than petrol. The recent shift restores the natural balance. I think the reason that Diesel became dearer than petrol was pure demand in Europe combined with many euro countries shifting to low sulphur Diesel. Low Sulphur crude has a price premium over crude that can be used for high sulphur Diesel.
The Barrel: Bunker changes could put more strain on diesel
