Was caught sppeding by Police laser: Technical Question!
Was lasered by a well hidden mobile device (with police volvo on hand) yesterday. Although I saw the car late , I was of the opinion that they had either not targeted me, or only from the side or back. However I kept an eye on my mirrors , and soon saw the patrol car gaining on me ( with me now doing 70).
Was pulled over and given a fixed penalty ticket .
I have no complaints as I was doing 87 on a dual carriageway.
However, I do have a device which normally and reliably confuses any laser! This did NOT go off and hence my earlier confidence that they had failed to target me.
QUESTION; Can a static laser detect speed anywhere else on the car other than head on??? (this is where my device is located)
If not , then my device failed to work !!! I will then have to have it tested.

To get a speed reading they are going to have to hit you head on or directly from behind. If a laser is used at an angle to your direction of travel then they are going to start having to use trigonometry to calculate and this will be much easier to dispute.
Is it possible that the mobile device was using radar? Or that you went through two fixed points in too short a time? Then the Volvo was deployed as an intercept car.

It is too easy to get an erroneous reading with a laser gun, however much they say the coppers are trained in the way they use them. I think it is unfair to use them to convict drivers.

I didn't think they were allowed to use laser gun readings and that they were only used to detect if someone is speeding or not. As soon as they have a reading over 85mph showing on their gun, they then use the vascar system to do you with the speed, so its a combination of both but prosecution on the vascar, not the laser reading.
The reason i believe this to be true as this has happened to me twice. Once about 5yrs ago when i was hurtling down the motorway at around 130mph when road angel flashed laser. I slammed the brakes on as soon as i could and low and behold out pops a police car 20secs later. I was shown a recorded speed on his laser gun at 131mph but vascar reading of only 97mph. He used the vascar reading and i was given a £60 fine and 3 points. The same thing again happened again about 2yrs later, 102 and 85 that time.
On both occasions they chose to let me have their vascar reading over their laser reading hence it is my belief that they use the laser initially, then when a positive reading comes back, the vascar method is then used.
Most people will not be aware that they have been lasered though so laser and vascar speed will no doubt be the same or if accelerating, vascar higher.
I was just lucky that my RA went off on both occasions.
