What with the present grief between North Korea and the rest of the civilised world, I got to thinking about the Eastern bloc.

£30 years ago, we were in the same boat with that lot: they wanted nowt to do with us, vilified us at every turn end, and cost us dear in defense against possible attacks from them, or off their soil

NOW, suddenly, they all want to be our friends, they all want to be in the EC which WE have built and paid into for years, they want to trade with us etc etc etc etc

Are we mad? WHY have we not said, "Look guys, you didn't want owt to do with us for 50 years, now take your selves off and pay your way into your own little EC"?

I reckon it's because Dubya convinced Bliar that Europe would be safer with them IN rather than out, and he meant the USA would be.:mad;

But the USA aren't subsidising these guys, are they?

Ask yourself why the eastern bloc became what it was and ask how the likes of Poland and the baltic states felt at being abandoned and left to suffer at the hands of the soviet union. Do you really think that tens of millions of Ukrainians wanted to starve to death ?
