I would say its many years off yet, but a great idea for certain applications.
Obviously it would require everything it interacted with to have a readable or researchable tag of sorts.

Bit like the fridge that can tell you what is going out of date, and suggest recipies to use the products up, as well as write a shopping list and email it to you.... All requires 3rd party input.

Fantastic none the less.
