Those dictaphones are scary things, being so small and that. Can make a dangerous weapon against someone if needed. As for the legalities of it, I have no idea.

Cheers,

Nick

There is something suspicious going on at work and one guy is taping cnversations and not being open about it.

I just wondered if there was anything dodgy about it in terms of legality.

Is he one of your bosses, or on the same level as you. If he is relatively on the same level, I would ask him what he is upto. If is silly enough to be recording people and lacks the necessary intelligence to cover up what he is doing, then it is only fair enough that you ask him what he is playing at. In reality though, it is rarely that simple. Spend a tenner at dixons and present him with a mini boom mic, that should get the message across!

I tell you what, I can sound pretty scary down the phone. Give me his number when he is in the office and I will ring him up, play it cool and freak him out by asking him and also wind him up a bit. Could be a larf.

A lot of our phones at work are recorded - your call may be recorded for your own security/training sort of stuff - but I'm sure all the phones that are recorded have a sticker on them warning you of that.

It's not actually illegal, but unless the conversationees are informed beforehand, it will not hold up in a court of law (or so my understanding is...)

I've got a Siemens SL45i with a digital dictaphone - I have been known on occasion to record conversations (especially with my estate agent and solicitor!!), but mroe seriously to protect myself against potential situations in the future. Just download it to the pc and burn to CD.

I think in the right circumstances it's ok, but not for the sake of it. No

Just my opinion.....

Remember, Big Brother IS watching you

I think that it is legal so long as at least one party knows that the conversation is being recorded. What is NOT allowed is for someone else (who is not taking part in the conversation) to record communications between two (or more) others.

You could always challenge the other person as to whether they are recording the conversation (this challenge would then appear on any recording). Alternatively, you could always refuse to speak to someone if you feel that your privacy is being compromised. Maybe take it up with HR and check on the official company position.

Usual disclaimers apply

He has been recording conversations without people knowing, it was only because the dictaphone fell out of his pocket.

What a sad person

I hope that you don't have to work directly with them.

He needs to see a shrink - by the sound of it he's paranoid.

At my place of work, he has every right to be paranoid. I have found something out to do with me that I am not happy about at all. But that is another story

Unfortunately I do have to work closely with him. I am not worried about what I have said as I will back up my statements no problem, I am just wondering if he is allowed to do it.

I know others are putting in complaints about it.
