DivX = Mp3 but for films, to put it simply.
If you want to copy a dvd then DivX is the usual format that ppl use because it squashes an 8gig dvd down to less than 1gig without losing too much quality.

Will explain it better and more acurately than me

I don't think there are any DVD players that understand DIVX - you can only play the videos on your PC.
Some DVD players can understand SVCD (Mpeg2) though: you can compress a DVD onto 2-3 normal-sized CDRs.

All DVD discs are the same - sort of......
Any DVD you buy or hire in the UK will work. There is regional encoding to stop you buying north american discs, but many players are multi region now anyway which means you can buy discs anywhere.
DivX is a format used for 'ripping' or pirating DVD's and compressing them down to a size that makes exchanging them electronically a practical proposition. Most DivX files are of copyright works and therefore illegal. I don't think there are any DVD players that play DivX, just as there weren't any CD players that would play MP3 until recently.
It really is nothing to worry about.
