Anyone into their lawn?
An odd question. Whilst in the garden last night, I decided my lawn looked rather neglected and I want to do something about it. We have a chap cut the grass theres no care taken and at £10 a week and a recession on I feel I should cut the grass myself and if I'm going to do it I'd like a lawn to be proud of.
So, has anyone used these weed killer things - like the ones on the TV that say they kill the weeds and give a nce green lawn within a week? Do they work?

I am very proud of my lawn! being new to all this gardening malarky I have been experimenting. To get nice very green strong blades of grass I have been using "after cut" which seems to work very well although it seems to grow also very quick!
I have used a moss killer also, seems to be ok but could do better, I'm told moss is very hard to get rid of?
I did all the usual earlier in the year, raking out the dead grass and aereation etc. and I am chuffed with the results. I was concerned about patchyness but it all seems to have filled in well. I put some new seeds and fertiliser pellets down.
Weeds, well thats a new one, I await the experienced "grass technitions" to offer advice

Thanks chaps. Whats this aeration bit then SPG?
Theres lots of horrible weed things in our lawn. I think these need shifting first but now sure how.

You shouldnt need to use anything on a lawn unless it is in really bad condition, a treatment of lawn food can help at the beginning of spring, but other than that, regular cutting, cutting no more than half the growth off at once, will keep it nice and green and healthy.
Regular mowing also discourages weeds, dandelions etc... as they get cut too often to get strong.
Lawns usually get rough looking when they arent cut often enough, then the really long grass is scalped right back, leaving lots of yellow shoots. Cutting regularly also encourages the grass to spread under the ground, which gives a nice thick green lawn rather than patchy areas with not much growth.
Having just spent a load on a new lawnmower this week, I will be aiming to cut my lawn at least twice a day from now on to justify the cost !

You can get an electric scarifier for around £30. Basically this is just a load of prongs which whizz around raking out any moss and dead grass. Good all round but you can be left with bare patches if you have a lot of moss! Birds love the raked up stuff as it's nest building time at the moment.
As said aeration is just a load of holes in the lawn. Green Thumb do it with the pro machine but you are left with a load of "plugs" all over the lawn which take a few weeks to disappear. Walking around in golf shoes may help!!

I used to have a beautiful lawn but then we got this.
His names Dibnah, but I think DIGnah would have been more appropriate!
then we got this monster, and it was game over for my lawn
