Default My first 10K!

Just ran my first 10k road race in Whitstable, Kent.

I was hoping to get a time under 55mins and ended up at 54.30. Must try harder!

It was a fantastic experience with all the spectators cheering us on.

Definitley going to do a few more this year.

Good time for a first one, you'll soon see the times come down and the distance go up

I'm hoping to get around 40 minutes in the London 10k and crack 1hr 30 for the St Albans 1/2 marathon. Also got a place in next years London marathon

Take it easy and don't push to hard. Start by alternating running/walking setting yourself a time or distance target. Also check out the runners world web site for tips and advice.

I'm still going away, I'm just not leaving the county when I get back. Normally I'd move house every 2 years with the job, but I've got a second job in Northwood

I'm away Jun until Christmas

This is the training plan I am using
Run Windsor - Half Marathon training plan

I'd also strongly recommend getting one of these
Garmin Forerunner 50 Sports Watch with Wireless Sync: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

The training centre software will give you guidelines on what speed equates to Walk / Slow Jog / Jog / Fast Jog / Run / Fast Run etc.

Nice one Chris - that's a decent time too!

I only do off road 10k races so it's a bit hard to compare but usually get around 7 min miles. Last one was a coastal race (like a fell run) and was brutal!

How did you find it? I always go hell for leather and hit a wall at about 6km - then manage to get through it and find a bit in reserve for the finish. Then can't walk properly for a few days!

Was the course hilly or fairly flat? I want to get a 10k road race in the bag just to try and get a good time. Done 42 mins for a trail 10k so would hope for sub 40 mins.

Got an off road tri this weekend - just doing the short distance (500m open water swim, 12km MTB ride, 5km run) but still bricking it as not been able to due much/any swim training recently due to sinusitis problems when I swim in a pool.

Any more races planned?

nice one

10k is a really good distance, and any sub 60 mins time is very good -- its amazing how hard it is to get your time down

one in sept if anyone is interested --- organised by my Wife

It’s a really cracking multi terrain course, few soft hills, very picturesque too

Hodgy - looks like a good one but a bit far away - damn!

SJ - that's good going. Are you fully recovered now? I'm falling to bits - dodgy right knee (thanks to slightly flat right foot) has led to a bad hip flexor which often hurts when I run (I ignore it and am doing physio for it), the my dislocating shoulder which is now almost fine has led to my lower right trap twanging - again doing physio for it but it keeps moaning. Had to lay off the weights for two weeks and ease up on the running. Cycling is fine though so been doing plenty of miles.

So if you do nothing you get fat, if you exercise a lot, you fall apart - can't win!

Tenby - I'm an ex beach lifeguard volunteer and lifelong surfer plus swim in the sea a lot in the Summer - just not been able to train recently due to dodgy sinuses. It's in a small river estuary on a beach.

Usually swim (and run) with our pet black lab - she's a flipping amazing swimmer. In fact this is last Summer swimming around our boat. Clearly with a snorkel though which is cheating.

Just done my usual 5k trail route - 90% off road, hilly, muddy, five assorted gates, two stiles - 21m 34s - not too bad. Probably do the tri 5k in about three hours though...
