Question Private plate transfer with in a private sale..... How?

Morning All,

Never done this before, but I've got a private plate on my current car. Logistically, what are the options for getting the plate transferred over when I sell the car?

My guess is -

1. Fill in the Form V317 anyway.
2. Go to my local DVLA centre, pay the £105 and put it on retention.

3. Do it AFTER the sale, when I again, I've got to send the V5 off anyway.

4. Go with the new purchaser to the DVLA, do the paperwork for it all there and then. (Already got the old plates to go back on the car)

I'm trying to cut down the visits to the DVLA - my closest one is only a 50-mile round trip, but due to the traffic etc, it's a whole morning

How is it normally done?

Any recommendations?

Dan

I am sure there is a much easier way but...... We put the plate on retention and then assign it when we got the new car.
It means sending the V5 off twice but time isnt really an issue for us. And you have to pay either way.
If you have your new car before you sell your old car then a V317 will sort it all out, If you need to sell first or trade then I can only suggest retention.

Yes safest way is to put it on retention and then transfer later. You will just have to put the original plates back on the car you are selling, they usually give it its original number back.
