Common Sense Breaking Out????
Someone at the DfT has finally made a policy decision that makes sense!

Unfortunately, they still had some hand-wringing eco moron whinging that this doesn't provide any alternative to using a car as if contrived congestion is a good thing to make us use buses (that are invariably caught in the same contrived congestion).

The nice thing is that they will set the timing to below the speed limit so cyclists that can keep up with the traffic won't need to keep stopping
As for the eco whinger - does this mean that the pollution caused by sitting in the car while stuck in traffic is a better idea?

I cannot believe that this wasn't the policy all along. The people who think up these things should be hung from the nearest lamp-post! I had some strange idea that these people in positions such as this were there to serve the public but no, they are there to do completely the opposite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Previously the Department for Transport (DfT) had discouraged the systems which reduce fuel use, resulting in less tax being paid to the Treasury.
That is the quote of the century, effectivly the dft was trying to make us use up more petrol to increase revenue ? Makes a mockery of most of the last five years worth of green taxes.

Well how much extra fuel excise is raised from the congestion around the Dartford Tunnel in addition to the tolls levied?
I have always been curious to know this, but the information seems a little hard to come by.
Furthermore on this subject, it is the government's official position that the Dartford river crossing toll reduces congestion in this area.
I kid you not!
I wonder what other route is being taken by the so reduced.

In my experience, cyclists never stop for red lights anyway!!!. Or when they hit you, or at zebra crossings, or no entry signs, or in a lot of cases use the road, just the pavement.
Want to ease congestion and stop accidents??. Fine and put points on the driving licences of cyclists, and get them to have number plates. After all they are the single biggest law breakers and hazards on the roads in this country.

Actually, now my memory has got better I remember that they use the 'drop in fuel duty' as a result of better traffic flow as a negative cost when planning new traffic engineering projects. Bypasses or the like ...... go figure .... But it's not just the current gov. that have done this, this has been policy for ages AFAIK. (Latter point added so I don't get accused of battering Nu Labia by some poor defenceless socialist-type on here .... ).

Sounds very good if you are in the right traffic stream. Not so good though if you are waiting at the other lights which are at red while a neverending stream of traffic goes by on the green wave! At least at timed lights you will eventually be able to go through.

I agree cyclists are all lawbreakinig ***** who think they own the road, and in my experience they look at you as if they want to kill you if you have the ***** to bollock them when riding two abreast, or jumping red lights, or mounting the pavement etc etc
More trouble than they are worth!

This is a surprise. Many councils, including those in London (particularly under Red Ken) have adjusted traffic lights to have a longer dead time between light changes and alteration of sequence in many cases so that at a cross roads instead of just two off / on cycles (traffic from opposite directions both get green) there can be as many as six or more. So that congestion is actually increased which they were hoping would move more motorists to accept congestion charging.
Its certainly noticable in the town where I live. All lights only let one side go at one time where they used to allow opposing streams to go together, there wasnt any problem, but now traffic really builds up.

They do this a lot in Australia, where they are far more advanced at this sort of thing.
Consequently, many people jump red lights there.
I think it is only a matter of time for us to catch up.
