What to do about this guy?
Right,
Had a few problems recently with a guy using stolen credit cards on our site.
What happened was, a couple weeks ago someone brought some nissan parts on the website with different shipping address to the billing address ..... anyway, we sent the item by mistake to the billing address and got a phone call the next day from a lady saying she hadn't ordered these parts ..... someone had used her credit card ! So we arranged to collect the goods and she put a claim in through her credit card company ..... no problems .
Two days after, he placed the same order again but emailed using the womans name and said I really need these sent to my garage as I don't have time to take them there ..... I replied, no problem. I then called the lady and said ,Look he is trying to use your card again..... if you tell Virgin he will be waiting at this garage in two days time the police can pick he up , she did and then called back to say they would look into it ....but they done nothing .
Couple of weeks passed and heard nothing .
I then got another transaction on the site for the same order with the same mobile number, but with a different credit card different name . I called the police in the morning and gave the details -which they said would get someone to call me back .....they never did.
And again last night, same mobile number, same goods different card billing and shipping address but this time I picked up his I.P address , phoned the police again today and they never called back again.
Not sure where to go with this one as fear he will keep getting new credit cards, I very much doubt he is only using our site.....
Any advice guys ?
Chris

I admire your persistence, most people would have just said 'sod it' after getting fobbed off so many times. I think it is in your interest, business wise, to contact the following people as obviously the local plod are not interested

In 2007, the Home Office changed the way people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland report cases of fraud involving credit cards, online banking and cheques.
Now, instead of calling the police, you should report these types of fraud directly to your bank or card company. Credit card companies and banks are responsible for verifying the crime, and reporting it to the police.
These changes were designed to reduce bureaucracy and speed up investigations.

Contact the card issuer directly?? or your merchant bank?
I can tell you the issuer from the first 8 digits of the card. If you want I'll PM you my office number. I work in the EPOS industry and we have had customers report a spate of this recenty.

It seems to me the Police aren't really interested in real crime, its a bit like the hospitals aren't really interested in making people better. Aslong as they meet the abstract Nu Labour targets, who gives a monkeys toss about the 'real' world performance? Makes me feel sick ......................just about sums up the state of "Browns" country.
I hope u get the thieving scum..............

I have seen a fair bit of this in my work also. we use protx for our online card processing.
this will flag up potential fraudulent transaction and you can set it up to only send to the credit card holders address.
I know sometimes this is a pain as most people work during the day and it is helpful to deliver to an alternative address other than the card holders.
If it was me i would inform the card holder as you have done, from then on it is really up to them to contact there bank and have the card number changed.
luckily you seen the potential problem before you lost goods, my work has fell victim to some losses in the passed.
I guess to be safe just use credit card holders address for delivery only , i have seen quite a few company's do this of late.

Police don't want to know on credit card stuff in my experience.
But when card is authorised you can choose to input part of street address and cardholder's post code?

Yes, go to the press, local first and make sure they know exactly how many times the police could have caight a fraudster red handed for minimal effort.
It beggars belief that even when handed a real criminal on a plate they still can't do their job properly.

As for the Police, most i know are good people, most want to do a good job and put away scumbags, most live in the same communities we do.
The problem lies with the government and its target driven approach to crime.
Re this particular case i would contact the local and national press and publicise that this is going on with little interest from the police. ID theft and c/card fraud are big issues and real crimes.
Interestingly the Paramedic who i met Sunday was saying that 15 years ago when he joined they had some 260 ambulance staff and 4 administrators, now they are similar number of ambulance staff and 80 administrators including a HR and personnel departments - 2 separate departments.
You can see where the money that is pumped in goes, the paramedic was sick and tired of the wastage he sees.

How about the first purchase must be to the cardholders address, subsequent purchases can, on request, be sent to a different address, providing the card details have not changed. If the card details change, then it goes back to the cardholder's address until the next order.
Typically your card details should not be changing that often, unless the card is being lost/stolen frequently.
For someone making a one-off purchase it might be a pain, but if you mention it's to protect the buyer from fraud, I'm sure that might appease them slightly.

The card issuer is the person to contact, They have more money to invest in card fraud than the police, People forget that there are only 3000 officers in the whole country, If you make a complaint it will be put on someones work load and they will help you, But like a lot of underfunded businesses they have a lot of work on. No real excuse but rape terrorism etc have to take priority.
But contact the issuer directly for the swiftest response. Hope it works out for you. I have people trying it on with me all the time and it makes me sick to my stomach.

That doesn't wash with me i'm afraid , credit card theft is a crime -police are there to fight crime ,its what they are paid for .

I still think you will get a faster response from the cars issuer. The have dedicated fraud teams that will get all the required evidence and take the matter forward a lot faster.

If there's an identifeid place where the fraud is being done from then it will get passed to the relevant police force.
It won't be of interest to your local force, assuming it is in another force area.
The card issuers usually do the investigating for low level stuff and then pass their findings to the relevant police force.
