Looking at selling one of my cars

Any advice, tips etc for selling it on ebay

I have sold loads of stuff on ebay in the past, just never sold a car, so looking for a bit of advice to maximise the sale

Make sure your as honest as possible, and put in the add please view before bidding, so your not accused of misleading a buyer.
Chances are they may be traveling a bit of a way, so will be annoyed if the cars not as described.

Brutal honesty will get you your best price and lots of photos are a best bet. View before bid is worthwhile advice to offer.

Cheers

Car will be as described, and I would choose to view before bid (was possibly thinking of a Buy It Now, but guess the same applies as bidding to a degree)

What are the fees for selling a car, as it isnt the same as selling a normal item

Ive tried autotrader in the past and to be honest I have ONLY ever recieved Spam emails and never a single phone call, so have found it to be a complete waste of money

Im not in a major rush to sell, but the next few weeks would be ideal

How do you go on regarding payment etc, is cash an accepted option, bit uneasy about accepting paypal payment for the full amount, due to 1, their fees are disgusting and 2. they could turn round and file a dispute and win and getting their money back and me losing a car

Have you tried it on Piston Heads?
Make a Photobucket slide show (and add a link) with loads of photos on showing everything to prove the condition mods etc it will save you a fortune on uploading photos and answer a lot of people’s questions.
Answer every question you receive some people can’t be bothered thinking if you have asked to many questions you are just wasting the sellers time but I always ask loads when I am looking for a car and walk away if they can’t be bothered to answer.

I heard that the best time to end an auction is Thursday lunchtimes and Sunday afternoon. Items that finish at these times achieve the best prices for some reason.

Lots of pictures - use photbucket links, honesty and a proper description that is well written with no spelling errors or grammar errors.

I mention everything I know, and list the service history bill for bill. It shows the car's what you say it is.

Sounds obvious, but descriptions littered with errors detracts from the item you're selling.

I've sold loads of cars on ebay, and have found any day other than Friday or Saturday good to end on. Always between 7pm and 9pm.

2hrs spent listing a good ad can add 20% to the end price as buyers are confident it's as listed.

And you can get your fees wiped if your buyer is happy....... Easy!

Good luck

Spelling and half decent English are key for me. I hate trying to decipher text talk etc and sometimes just ignore the item.

Totally agree, I have this (unfounded) preconception that people who cant be bothered to use normal English in an add for there car are the kind of people that will skimp on services etc...
I know its unfounded but I just cant imagine a real car enthusiast text talking his/her way through a sales pitch.

Are you going to use Ebay as an auction sale or a Classified sale? I sold my wifes old Vectra as a classified and found it very good. You can see people who are watching the sale and how many hits on the advert - plus it's a set fee.

Apart from that: as above. Make sure you have plenty of photos, they don't need to be on the advert but people may want to see some other views (engine / boot / drivers / passenger seats) and get the grammar and spelling sorted

I sold a car last week for my mother-in-law.

Chap drove 550miles from Inverness to pick it up, went very smoothly.

Cost £40 all in for a £3000 sale, £10 of which was listing fees.

As above, honesty and loads of details/pics definitely the way forward.

I started the auction @ £2750 with no reserve, had 36 watchers at the end - 4 bids later £3k on the nose.

Found the whole thing suprisingly hassle free

Ummm... All I can say is watch out for those fees. Also not sure it applies for selling cars, but if using PayPal they won't release the cash to you for goods over £100 unless the buyer leaves positive feedback Also for some reason I got stung on another PayPal fee where someone paid using a Credit Card through Paypal and I ended up coughing up for them I have heard of Buyer beware, but for E-bay it can be Seller beware. Good luck with the sale

Thanks All

It will be a classified sale I think, dont mind taking more pictures on request, of things like engine bay etc,

Grammar and spelling, well I may just be foofed on that one

Timwinner, I think its an Ad not an ADD

Jpor that is my concern re paypal, so would much prefer cash on collection etc,

Never accept paypal.

Rip-off and reversable, despite what paypal say.

If the buyer wants it they will pay cash.
