Default Covent Garden area, Good bars advice!

Visiting the big smoke this weekend with the missus, were from "Upth North" in sunny Manchester and I've not been to London City Centre for over 10 years, were looking to do some cool bar action in the evenings without walking too far from the hotel in Covent Garden. Any advice on where to go on the night bar scene would be great. We like the smaller independent type bars, so as long as its not a rammed Wetherspoons or Brannigans type of place then we will try anything reccommended.

Cheers

Best known pub to me is the Wenlock Arms. That's hardly a quiet stroll around the corner and isn't obvious to find. Tube and/or Bus from where you are staying wouldn't be too onerous.

Covent Garden and quiet though...

Porterhouse is the one I'm most recently familiar with.

The Mrs n me went down for NYE, there are endless cracking little boozers mate, we ended up in a few nice traditional bars, one on the corner of Whitehall and Great Scotland Yard, thats less than a mile, and pie and liquor in the oldest pub in the west end, The Lamb and Flag (Rose Street iirc), and if you like Mexican food then try Chiquitos in Leicester Square it gets busy but not rammed (try the Blue Heaven cocktail), both only a few hundered yards away from Cov Grdn, you'll have a ball
Just to add, the Comedy Store just off Leicester Sqr is a good night out too

Cafe Pacifico on Langley street - good tex mex food and great coctails. the service is a little aggressive, like those hip uber cool bars , but if you can hold your own it is worth it. coctails £5 a go, chicken fajitas around £14 IIRC.

If you just want drinks, go to the fuel bar in the pit inside covent garden

For lunch: The best burgers this side of the Atlantic has to be "Union Burger" in Covent Garden, just off the square. Real beef, hand made in front of you with real potatoe chips & salad...hmm!
