Default UK weekend break ideas please

She who must be obeyed has decreed that a weekend break is required.

1) Must be maximum 3 (ish) hours drive from London

2) Must have something to occupy a few hours in the day with something worth doing/seeing

3) I really need a specific hotel to stay in, not just a place. Hotel must be really nice, no B and Bs please

4) Must have somewhere REALLY nice to eat nearby.

5) In an area of natural beauty

Any help greatly appreciated

How about Welcome to Three ways House Hotel, Home of The Pudding Club in the Cotswold village of Mickleton

We had a long weekend away there and it was very nice. Some nice things to do around there as well, such as Warwick Castle and Stratford on Avon.

Oh, and the puddings are damned fine

Easy.........stay at the Crazy Bear at Stadhampton (south of Oxford) a brilliant kitcsh hotel with wacky cool rooms (wet rooms, bath at the end of the bed etc.) dinner there or at the Manoir with Monseiur Blanc & a day out in Oxford. A stunning combination that me & Mrs D did last Autumn.

Hey, Deep.

Wales is the daddy, man.

1. it can be done in 3 hours, if you drive a Subaru to it's potential.

2. There's plenty to see e.g. sheep, hills, greenery, slate mines, castles etc.

3. Plenty of good hotels here. "The Quay" hotel in Conwy is not bad. They have a brilliant Spa as well.

4. Loads of places to eat all over Wales. Home-cooked type food in North Wales food places is world famous, actually.

5. Yes, I am talking Snowdon and surroundings. It is an area for outstanding natural beauty.

Even if it takes 6 hours, I'd come on a holiday to North Wales, it is beautiful! Once you are in this range, check out Portmeirion village. Famous architect Williams-Ellis designed and constructed the village between 1925 and 1975. He incorporated fragments of demolished buildings, including works by a number of other architects. Portmeirion's architectural bricolage and deliberately fanciful nostalgia have been noted as an influence on the development of postmodernism in architecture in the late twentieth century. They have a nice hotel called Portmeirion Hotel there too. It is so bleddy good that one has to pay to even get into the village!

Good luck and enjoy; wherever you go

Hotel Endsleigh - Welcome

Not stayed in the hotel but have stayed in a cottage in the grounds, utterly amazing scenery, no major roads, airports or other racket making items nearby.

Not stayed there, but live not too far away, a lovely looking place, but you'll struggle to do it in three hours from London.

+1 for Bath.

My mate used to live there and I loved going to visit. Then they moved to Taunton.

Thanks some great suggestions.

1) Bath is great, but went there recently

2) Stayed at the Captains club last year (and highly recommend it)

3) Weymouth one looks nice

4) Endsleigh looks gorgeous, how long is the drive though?

5) How far is the Quay hotel from London?

Thanks

Google says 4 hrs 14 minutes, further than I thought from London

This is where we stayed,

which is in the gardens, now owned by the Landmark trust, my dad and his two brothers used to spend their holidays there as kids as my Great Grandad was the Duke of Bedfords Head Gamekeeper until he blew his own brains out. My grandad used to drive them down from Manchester in a Ford Pop or similar, 50 mph all the way, took like ten hours with stops.

About three and a half hours from the M3 turn off, on the M25, if driving normally and steady traffic.

Thanks. Shortlist is the Quay in Wales or the Endsleigh. I'll see who has availability and whether one is a shorter drive

Spent two nights there in a suite - it's abolutely stunning and you'd be in her good books forever. The food is also amazing. What part of London?

Stayed in some nice hotels but this stands head and shoulders above the rest. Pricey (over £700 for two nights with food for us) but worth it.
I'd say 3.5 hours on a good run from West London. The last bit is pretty slow - but fun in an M5!

. It's run by Alex Polizzi (who has a nice RS4 Avant) - her grandad is Charles Forte and her Mum runs the equally stunning Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes.

We always use i-escape.com

Von Essen have some lovely hotels dotted around the country too. The one in North Wales is supposedly Tom Cruise's favorite place to stay in the UK.

Deep, this is the website for the Quay hotel at LL31 9DJ>
The Quay Hotel and Spa | Luxury Hotel, Deganwy, North Wales

There is another good hotel in Snowdon catchment area:
Ruthin Castle Hotel, Denbighshire, North Wales

Mediaeval banquet at Ruthin Castle hotel can be booked for non-residents too. This banquet is a very good, "real Welsh" experience with live harp musicians etc.

Deep - we went soon after we lost our baby for total relaxation and a bit of a treat. It worked wonders. Hopefully your circumstances are a lot better than ours were but for somewhere to actually help massively after a tragedy says a lot.
They upgraded us to a suite - the rooms were so huge and amazingly decorated that we laughed when we first saw it. Absolutely enormous, secluded and stunning. The food was also top notch and the 109 acres of grounds are amazing.

Ask for room 1 - it's pretty much the entire left hand side of this pic (ground level)!!

Yes it's expensive but it's honestly completely worth the money.

Hey Matt, sorry to hear about that past tragedy, every parents worst nightmareNot sure how I would cope with something like that.

We've booked the Quay in Wales, partly because I haven't been to Wales since I was a schoolboy! The Endsleigh is defo on the radar now and we'll save that for a big one ie anniversary etc
