Default UK Mobile in USA?

Sorry - I'm sure this has been asked a dozen times but will a UK mobile work in USA for local calls and calls in and out of USA? Number starts 0771 so what codes should be used.

It's on a Virgin contract but I don't know the model, nothing flash though.

Also will UK charger be OK?

Finally what are call cost implications?

Thanks , knowledgeable and nice SN peeps

david

To call a local number in America you should still use +1 then the number, to call home +44 then the number without the 0.

Most chargers accept whatever voltage you throw at them, although it is worth looking on the back to see it says 100-240V AC. You will need an socket adaptor though.

Cost will be A LOT!

The mobile need to be a tri-band job as the USA use different frequencies to us. Most modern ones are but worth checking.

Local calls just dial the number like normal with area code etc. For international you need +44 1234 123456, i.e. 44 is the country code for UK and just drop the 0 off the area code. To dial it from the UK just dial the number as usual, the network will work out where the phone is located.

Check the charger is okay for 110V use, most are and will auto sense the voltage.

As for cost, down to your service provider and which provider you connect to in the States. On a normal tariff expect to be paying around £1 a minute for incoming and outgoing international calls, not sure how it works on local stuff but also expect to pay a premium. Texts cost typically 40p to send and free to receive.

If you are going to be doing a lot of calling consider getting an international call card and using phone boxes, hotel phones, etc. You can also get international SIM cards for mobiles.
