Default Nuclear sub crash

BBC NEWS | UK | Nuclear subs 'collide in ocean'

I know Sub's have no windows but I would like to think that the pilots of a nuclear sub have some way of seeing what is coming. Given the size of the ocean what are the chances of two subs bumping into each other ? Were they playing chicken ?

If it was just a bump then knowing how the French drive they'd not have an issue with it!

read strangly. either the french sub came up under the british sub (going on damage being to the hull and the tower respectively) or the british sub sailed straight into the french one.

I guess these things aren't easy to stop once going!

Certianly a good row with the french.

Contrary to what "the BBC's Caroline Wyatt" might believe, the whole idea of Nuclear Submarines is that they are virtually undetectable

It actually surprises me that this sort of thing doesn't happen more often

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament described the reported collision as "a nuclear nightmare of the highest order".

CND chair Kate Hudson said: "The collision of two submarines, both with nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons onboard, could have released vast amounts of radiation and scattered scores of nuclear warheads across the seabed."
They come out with completely irrational scaremongering statements like that, with absolutely no basis in truth, and still wonder why the normal world views them as bunch of sandal clad fcukwits

Yes. weirdly The Sun has a better article on it saying that the anti sonar technology is now so good on these things the chance is neither saw the other one until too late. As i say at that point i doubt stopping it is as easy as pressing the pedal in the middle!

The Sun also reported that the damage to the French sub was the sonar dome which is what makes me think they were the lower of the two.

If the French sub's sonar dome hit Vanguard's tower, surely the French sub must have been the higher of the two

Agreed.

I love the way these things skulk about down there and generally end up playing silly beggars stalking each other.....

I know it was the Russians and the Yanks and just a movie, but........:

Jones: Conn, sonar! Crazy Ivan!
Capt. Mancuso: All stop! Quick quiet!
[the ships engines are shut down completely]
Beaumont: What's goin' on?
Jones: Russian captains sometime turn suddenly to see if anyone's behind them. We call it "Crazy Ivan." The only thing you can do is go dead. Shut everything down and make like a hole in the water.
Beaumont: So what's the catch?
Jones: The catch is, a boat this big doesn't exactly stop on a dime... and if we're too close, we'll drift right into the back of him.

Neither the US Navy nor the Russian Navy will confirm how often

But both sides do admit that scenarios not unlike the above did occur more than once

PS: The book is even better than the film

Perhaps you do. Thought we'd already said the BBC story wasn't up to much - you posted that!

Also Daily Mail? Really? That won't be some sort of xenophobic reporting then will it?

The Times good enough for you?

British and French nuclear submarines crash in Atlantic - Times Online
Armed with 16 ballistic missiles, it is now believed to have been towed last night to Faslane, a nuclear submarine base in Scotland, with dents and scrapes to its hull.

Ha hah just went to check another one and even The FT is quoting The Sun!

FT.com / UK - Nuclear submarines reportedly collide
After the accident in the mid-Atlantic, the Royal Navy’s HMS Vanguard returned to base in Faslane, western Scotland, with dents and scrapes visible on its hull, the Sun reported.

Story coming from Reuters though.

Not being funny but it is only possible to comment on what i've seen and most mainstream papers are reporting this angle. If you've seen something about it have damage to the tower post it up instead of making unnecessary comments

I was joking with regards to my source of new material I'm currently working in Poland, my only two (three if you count SN) sources of English language news are the BBC's website & two day old photocopies of the Daily Mail in the hotel lobby

How did they not see the french sub... It would have had a massive white flag flying from the top of it.

I'd be careful dragging that old American lie out if I were you

When it comes to fighting wars, historically the French have far better played/won/lost stats than we do And everybody has far better stats than the Septics

I know, it made me smile too I don't think it's throughout Poland though, I suspect it's a Holiday Inn thing

I think we'll discover that they each suspected the other was in the area, and were trying to see how close they could get without being detected

Pretty f**king close, as it turns out

Both subs are missile boats. They don't tend to splash around the high seas making a lot of noise. They also don't tend to use Sonar if they can help it as Sonar is an active system/transmission.

Given both boats were hiding in a large ocean, it's something of a surprise that they would collide. Given France aren't too co-operative/chatty usually, that implies that you are very much more likely to find these subs in certain parts of the ocean than anywhere else.

Surely the "hull" of a submarine is pretty much all of it except the tower, therefore dents and scrapes on the "hull" doesn't have to mean the underside. Or is that just me?

They do still use Sonar Vindaloo, just not the stuff seen in the movies that goes 'ping'.

Passive Sonar arrays contain some of the most sensitive (and expensive) listening equipment ever devised, and it is continually evolving

It amazes me that the press actually printed the capabilities of both subs where any tom dick or harry can read about it. Anyone reading that article now knows, which type and how many missiles each sub carries, how big it is, how fast it goes and how many crew it has.
