Toddlers - Whole Milk vs Soya
Any advice from fellow parents?
My 4yr old son had a lactose intolerance when he was little and after 2 years of prescription milk, we were reocommended to switch to (Alpro) soya milk. He took to it well and now 4, he won't have anything else on his cereal.
My wife has now got our 13mth old daughter on to it as well, but as we know she doesn't have an intolerance to lactose, I want her to have normal cows milk.
She says that the protein and calcium content is much higher in soya milk and it's therefore 'better' for our daughter but I believe there is more processing in soya milk (for longer shelf life) and it might not be as good as she thinks.
Does anyone have any experience with soya milk for kids?
Cheers SS23

Advice
I would ask a paediatric nutritionist. I don't know how you could find one.
I do know there is a fair amount of salt in some soya milks and too much can be harmful to a bairn.
Seek expert advice is my advice.

My son is 13mths, he has formula in the morning, and his last bottle at night is 5oz of full fat cows milk.
I'm not a nutritionist, but i would say cows milk would be best for strong bones and teeth over soya milk?

And you never know who to believe. My wife stopped using Soya as there are lots of 'scares' about it causing all kinds of nasty things.
We now have Rice and Almond milk...

We have non-pasteurised cow's milk. Lots of articles etc on the web about the supposed advantages/disadvantages of one over another but at the end of the day it's up to you.
I must admit that a comment from someone I read stayed with me. 'What other animals drink a product from another animal that is only produced when pregnant'.......

I was lactose intolerant when I was younger too. My mum used to make me cakes using soya (for parties while everyone was getting the 'real' cake.
Anyway, a while having Goats milk, I went back to Daisy... Came back briefly after that, then been fine since.
Can't of been that bad though, I can't even remember the time scales!

errrrr- who cares, it's just milk!
I have a 2.5 yr old, btw, who's had both - doctor at one point suggested lactose intolerance (bollocks, noone had that when I was little!) She likes both - not sure it matters too much. Has to be more interesting battles to have with the other half?

Thanks for all the replies - I'll be speaking with a nutritionist at the next opportunity, but I'm probably worrying about nothing.
