Default speed camera convictions illegal?

'Nearly all speed cameras in Britain illegal', court is told - Telegraph

If its true then the legal implications could be massive and will they repay fines ?

No chance - this government will wriggle, deny everything, order a long term investigation and then bury it.

Its a nice thought, And I would bet there are loop holes that make it unlawfull, but seriously.. No chance of that standing. When has the law ever got in the way of government decisions.

to be honest I heard this on the radio 2 news this morning at 6:30 and then nothing else all day and it took me a while to find anywhere which was carrying the item on their website, so looks like the burying has begun.

I'm struggling to see how speed cameras relate to hanging Some poor reporting skills used in that article

Labour won't NEED to bury it. Remember that they were the first ever political party to introduce retrospective legislation, and have now done it twice.

No WAY are they going to let that go.........or give up that amount of money
Look at how they reacted over the Idris Francis thing...........threatened to chuck out their dummies if the ECHR didn't give in their favour.

I really hope that somehow they get pinned down on this one. I personally do not think the the accuracy and reliability of speed cams of one type or another are good enough to be used to convict the public. It has been shown that it is too easy for a result to be corrupted by external influences.

I used to agree with you Les, but as I'm getting a little older, I'm starting to actually believe they are good thing. They are painted bright yellow, you can view a list on the internet that tells you where they are and camera zones are marked with a big picture of a bleeding camera! If you get caught speeding, then you really weren't watching the road were you!

Accidents have decreased in areas local to me with speed cameras.

i dont think cameras are all that bad especialy if there by a school etc, just dont agree where the money goes from the fine you pay. think it should be spent on improving roads or even help for victims of vehicle related accidents.

I don't disagree with those points you make at all, and I think that more use should be made of them at critical places such as schools etc instead of sleeping policemen.

My point was that they should be reliable and accurate. It is unfair if someone is done when he was not breaking the law.

I keep thinking of the bloke on a motor 'bike who was summonsed for doing about 45 mph I think when he was able to prove that he was doing 17 mph. The Gatso specialist said the the speed measured might have been due to the effect of the radar beam striking the side of a bus! Thats what bothers me. Hand held ones are shown to be subject to spurious readings too.
