It's not even worth me having an accountant, although I keep getting told to put in expenses for office use (otherwise known as the utility room) and lots of other things. I just can't be arsed!

Was going to do mine tonight, but can't find how much I earnt in the last tax year

Prob end up getting it in late again for the 3rd year running - in a way I wish the fine was £1000 and not £100 then I would get it in on time!!

Did mine last year and paid the £348.xx when I submitted it.

Logged on to the HMRC site last week (for the first time since I submitted it) to be told I'm owed a refund for £348.xx.

My figures so far for 07/08 suggest HMRC owe me 8 pence

My accountant did mine about 4 months ago...

Had to pay a bit extra but not too much.

Corporation tax was also a biggie - "nice new car or use that money to bail out the banks?!"

just done it, even got a we have recieved it email.

but still had to phone them as the amount it calculates for you to pay does not include the reduction for last year payments on account!! they said the box is missing from the online assessment form (what else i wonder?) so take it off yourself.

i got £1750 back for the last tax year, it is defo worth getting an accountant to do it. Mine puts down all sorts for claiming back on from wash powder for work clothes to dog food for the guard dog. Also if you get fined and when you do finally get your return done they owe you money, you will get your fine back plus interest owed. Oh and my accountant charges £100

I was having that issue as well, and had a sleepless night trying to sort it out.

I then found out from a finance forum that the HMRC online system is actually an "offline" system which is then uploaded to their online system when you submit it - they had so many issues with the site being unavailable last January that they switched the systems.

You now just submit the return with the incorrect calculations, pay the amount you work out yourself (Petem95 - all figures for tax paid last year are on the HMRC system), and 48 hours later the online system updates to show you the proper figures.

I overpaid by 0.01p

Be a bit careful - some of those claims sound a bit "close to the wind" - I know people who have been done for similar.

We claim a portion of rent and bills as we work from home and claim for when we eat out on workdays but that's about it.

Seen people claim boats (client entertainment!!) and even houses on expenses only to land in deep trouble.

I would recommend an accountant for anything involving HMRC.

I got stitched up by them. They claimed I owed £8500. Half of which was for assumed earnings for a year I wasn't even in the country.

They took me to County Court - without telling me - while the whole issue was still being sorted.

Even though it turned out they owed me thousands for the years concerned, they refused to cancel the CCJ.

I also spent so much time on the phone talking to ill-informed idiots, Vodafone phone me up to see if I wanted to add the HMRC phone number to my "friends and family" discount.

It took over 2 years to sort out.

As far as I'm concerned, HMRC are the lowest form of life and should not be trusted. There are no words in the English language that sufficiently describes my contempt for them.

isnt it funny how people have completely different experiences

A few years ago I had a tax demand for 8k (i think it was a bit of "shot across the bows" from HMRC) anyway to cut a long story short after several face to face meetings and lots of phone calls to my local Tax office etc, a year later I got a refund of 6k -- I was adamant that i was not going to employ the services of an accountant

I always found the people at HMRC very helpful -- they are abviously not going to give you tax avoidance advice, but unless your circumstances are particularly complicated your not going to be far out -- plus no fees

but as i said everyone has different experiences

Best way to view accountants is:
You are one of many customers.
The HMRC is one "customer" they cannot afford to lose.

So sometimes it's worth coming up with your own ideas and also worth doing at least a basic accounting course so you always know what's going on.

I did and know our accountant does a good job. For £2k a year, so he ought to!
