None in Hooland though and three new blast furnaces built and into operation in India, using our technology.

Have to agree with your last comment GC8. This is bad, bad news.

Unfortunately, it was foreseen when we sold out, first via the merger with Hoogevens in Holland, then to Tata steel.

The Dutch were never going to lose jobs because THEIR government signed up to a charter from that horrid EC, that makes it very hard to make them redundant.

Labour, on the other hand, opted US out.

Not good news, but hardly a surprise. I think demand for steel is down 40% year-on-year - probably a big part of that due to the fact car production is massively down.

These cuts certainly won't be the last from Corus that's for sure

more casualties of Brown's economic ruin

And w*nker Brown swears blind that no-one could see this economic collapse coming.

Perhaps he'd care to explain why he and his party laughed Vince Cable, who said just that, out of the commons when Brown was still chancellor?

I say we should cut an equivalent number of jobs from Indian call centres and other jobs that have been outsourced from the UK and give them back to UK citizens.

Time to bring back protectionism.

I feel sorry for the employees, but I mourn the loss of the British steel industry.

I have mixed feelings about it Rich. A few things ring true, like the bit where theyre stuck on the car in the canal ("...aye; not bad...") but where it represents Sheffield as it does its absolute boll*cks and dont get me started on their 'steelworks'. Steelworks in Sheffield were huge; now steelworks in Sheffield are rare.

I'm based in Scunny, just round the corner from Corus. Infact I have recently started, and passed, the first stage of application for a modern apprenticeship... at Corus. These for the first time I have seen them, have been advertised publicly on job websites etc. Usually its school/college leavers who these positions are reserved for (or at least that is my previous understanding of it).

The plant here employs about 4,500 staff (used to be 17-18,000 years ago mind). When I take the Mrs to work at approx 6.30 every morning, we drive past Corus. Had news vans/reporters all over today. Unluckily, my fiancee's father's job is at risk as he works in the blast furnaces. He has already had to start faffing about and swapping shifts from Sundays to Fridays etc. as there is so little requirement for production. He's worked there 20+ years so I would assume he has respectable transferable skills and qualities (such as loco driving) which could find him alternative work.

Maybe my understanding is lax in this, but why publicly advertise job vacancies for school/college leavers when the company is making sharp cut backs. In the case of her father, I believe he will find out this a.m./p.m. depending on his shift today.

Doesn't look good, but it didn't deter me from applying. I assume the cutbacks in production wouldn't necessarily affect the area for which I personally have applied too.

I seem to remember that I was telling you that the chickens would come home to roost, when you were telling us how strong the economy was!
